Jerome Mathis
WR, Hampton
Dan Pompei analysis
Was considered a fourth- or fifth-round pick until he ran a 4.26 40 at the Combine. Also had a nice performance at the Gridiron Classic. Plays as fast as he times. Separates from defenders. Is an Olympic-caliber sprinter. Hands are a bit inconsistent. Is not a polished route-runner. Is inconsistent. Does not relish blocking responsibilities. Has character issues.

Nobody showed more speed at the NFL Combine that Mathis. His stock has been on the rise all winter, thanks to impressive work at the Gridiron Classic. Draft expert Gil Brandt and Cowboys coach Bill Parcells caught him at 4.25 in the 40, faster than Deion Sanders' Combine record 4.28. The task now for Mathis is to build upon his speed, and prove he's ready for the NFL. The biggest question now is how Mathis will transition from a small-college star to NFL receiver.
Mathis put on a show for scouts at Gridiron Classic, scoring on a 26-yard reception and a 38-yard run off a reverse. He finished with 108 yards of total offense on two catches for 59 yards and two carries for 49 yards, in addition to a 35-yard kick return.
He was an Division I-AA All-America team member as a return specialist, led the country with an average of 35.5 yards per return and set a Division I-AA career record with five kick returns for touchdowns. He also was the two-time NCAA East Regional champion in the 200-meter dash.
