I remember saying to myself nooooooo when the Cards signed Warner. All I can say is he sure changed my opinion. I appreciate all he did for Cardinal Nation.

I remember thinking when he went to the Giants that Warner was done. He had taken too many hits, had hand injuries that caused him to be turnover prone, and he just didn't have it anymore.

Obviously I wasn't thrilled when he came to Arizona. After-all, I had watched the Cardinals romp the Warner led Giants just the previous season. I thought, "great, another crappy FA aquisition, another washed-up retread".

I think about the effort, the work, the energy, the sacrifice that it must have taken Kurt Warner to revitalize his game. Warner though, as always, deflected taking credit, it was just God's plan or being given an opportunity. But it took more than that.

It took a man that refused to give up, refused to be labled, refused to lose courage and faith. Warner showed not only his team, not only the NFL, but all of us how it should be done.

I too, was a fan the buried you prematurely. When the Cards drafted Leinart , the first words out of my mouth were "Goodbye Kurt".
Ironically , how different would things have been had Leinart not broke a collarbone in St. Louis? One of the main reasons I was willing to toss you to the side of the road was the fact that we weren't a good team. If your not a good team then it just made sense to let the rookie cut his teeth.

But man, was I wrong. I own a #13 jersey Kurt, and I will not replace it until it falls apart. I will where the #13 every Sunday. I don't care who we draft or who emerges as the next great Cardinal. I waited 50 years to see my team, OUR TEAM, go to a Super Bowl. You have produced 2 division titles, an NFC Championship, 4 playoff victories and a Super Bowl appearance.

You are consumate pro. You are a man's a man. You will be missed. And finally, in my heart you have been and will always be a Cardinal!

As we watched a recorded version of Kurt's press conference my 7-year-old son clinged to his momma's arms, looked up at me and asked, "why is he retiring?"

"Well son, partially because he is getting too old to play professional football. But mostly because he wants to spend more time with his family."

My son, responding with weeping eyes, "That means the cardinals aren't going to be any good any more. I don't want him to not play anymore!"

That's all it took.

My wife started crying.

I shed a tear or two.

My 9-year-old daughter, though, held it together it seemed.

I asked for group hug. Wife and son were game.

My 9 year old daughter, though, reluctantly joined in, pulled away from us and stated, "really, I'm a steeler fan."

Thanks Kurt. Don't be a stranger. As a long time fan there were years and years of traveling after you finally caused an arrival for us. I'm not sure anyone that hasn't been on board for all those years of adversity can understand how great it was to finally make it to a place where we could feel some pride. That said, in the big picture, I'll still be a fan years and years from now, no matter where it goes from here. My hope though, is that you taught this organization how to win and the lesson will stick. But regardless, thanks for everything. Best of luck.

I appreciate that every training camp I went to, you left the practice field after I did because you were signing autographs.

I appreciate that one of my 12 year old students today came to class with a huge smile on her face saying she met Kurt Warner this weekend. (I forget where her dad took her, but she was saying all week that she was going to meet you). First thing she did before school today was come to me and say, "I met Kurt Warner! I shook his hand! I told him I wanted to sing when I got older and he said, "Follow your dreams."
