I doubt Arizona was a serious player for him anyhow. I sort of suspected it'd come down to Philly, Baltimore, Houston and Texas.

Also, the Matthews contract was outright rediculous. I always thought Bill Stoneman was smarter than this.

Now he's saying he's gonna deal Figgins to make room for Matthews and his contract. What a joke, if your asking me I'd rather have Figgins. He had a down year last year but he can play 4 positions and is great when on base. Absolute insane contract

You're right, also I was wrong about Redman, the guy looks the part but isn't that good.

Meche for 8-10 per year would be a huge mistake on the Dbacks part. Redman siimply isn't good and I have no idea how much he's asking. Meche has interest from the Cubs and Yankees which means someone will overpay for him. In the end, I bet Meche sign for 10 per which is a joke.

The question now is do we sign Wolf and Mulder (or someone else), sign a frontline guy like Schimidt, or sign Wolf and then trade for a pitcher. IMO, we should trade for a bat and either sign one or two pitchers.

I realize that Schmidt has past injury issues but he worries me the least out of guys like Wolf, Mulder, Meche,, etc... I wish we would have resigned Bautista, he would be a great back of the rotation guy and is a better option then most out there

Where is the bat you want to trade for going to play? Unless we trade Tracy or Jackson (which I hope neither) we have no openings. Young will start in CF, Q in RF, and Byrnes in LF. Our bigest traing chip is Estrada, we could part with Callaspo if we lockup Hudson, and Scott Hairston is another chip. We shouldn't trade any pitching even though they aren't front line starters, we need all the pitchingwe can get. Eventually I see Owings and Nippert as our 4 & 5 starters, hopefully we sign Scherzer and he ends up our 3.

Insane contract and I GUARANTEE if the Angels wind up trading Figgins because of this, they'll live to regret every second of it.

Overseascardsfan, why dont you want to trade Tracy or CoJack? They are both average at best and their skill sets are redundant. Both are very poor defenders, who hit line drives, and in an ideal situation would be a .300 hitter, who hits in like the 6 or 7 hole. Not exactly a super valuable piece to hang on to. I'd gladly trade one (or both) of them for a big bat or frontline starter.

They both hit around .300, and Tracy has the ability to hit 25-30 home runs. If you think they are mediocre, what team is going to give up a frontline starter for either of them. Plus who replaces either, Ramirez resigned with CHI, and FA options at 1st and third are slim to none.

Well if you trade both of them or package one of them w/ prospects, you may be able to get a good starter (heck, I'd even take a quality bullpen arm). Who do you replace them with? I dunno, you can probably move Callapso over to 3B....I'd rather have to platoon 1B or 3B in the short term, in order to get a good pitcher for the long term and worry about getting a corner infielder later.

As it stands now, Eveland, Edgar Gonzalez, Enrique Gonzalez, Dustin Nippert and Ross Ohlendorf are among those who could compete for the last two rotation spots.

"I think our pitching is starting to set up well," Byrnes said. "We still see other ways to try to improve it."

One possibility: left-hander Kei Igawa, who was put up for auction by his Japanese team. The Diamondbacks are expected to submit a bid by Monday afternoon's deadline for the 27-year-old, who has three strikeout titles in Japan and is expected to fetch substantially less than the $51.1 million the Boston Red Sox bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka's rights.

FSN reports Randy Wolf is close to signing with the Dodgers. He grew up in SoCal and went to Pepperdine and seems willing to take less money to play close to home.

Espn Insider says the Giants are in "serious talks" to acquire ManRam. Horrible if it happens

Question is, do the Giants have the pieces to make the deal happen?

Honestly, I see him winding up in Los Angeles. The Dodgers not only have the financial room to make a deal like Manny's fit in, they've got the prospects and firepower to make Boston listen. Plus, lately LA's become Boston West.

Damn.. Just thinking about this, JD Drew "opts out of his contract" and gets replaced by Manny Ramirez.. Sickening.

Wouldn't you think the Angels would be a better fit. Their farm system is just as good and Morenos wallett never closes.

I thought JD made a stupid move by opting out. Man, was I wrong. This offseason is absolutely ridiculous, it seriously makes me sick to my stomach. There's no way the MLB can let this keep getting out of control. There are way too many teams now that can't even afford marginal talent like Gary Matthews Jr and Danny Baez. It's time for a salary cap

Just saw on ESPN that Randy Wolf signed a 1 year, $8 million deal with the Dodgers. Another good move by Byrnes, get a better lefty for half the salary. I hope we rock Wolf everytime we play him

Pitching help still a priority
Right-hander Jason Schmidt and left-hander Barry Zito are believed to be out of the Diamondbacks' budget parameters, but other options remain.

The Diamondbacks have expressed interest in left-hander Mark Mulder and are planning to sit down with the representative for free-agent right-hander Tomo Ohka at the winter meetings next week in Orlando.

And then there's the trade market, which Byrnes says is their main focus.

"Most of our energy is on trades," he said, "with selective energy on free-agent scenarios. That's where we are right now. We're still taking a look at a lot of possibilities, feeling like we can be somewhat selective as we proceed."

Craig Counsell is near a two year deal with the Padres, which is good news for us as we could then offer him arbitration (which he would obviously have to decline), and pick up a supplemental first round compensation pick for. The Dbacks are also entitled to compensation if they offer arbitration to Miguel Batista or Luis Gonzalez and they sign elsewhere. Offering arbitration to Batista is a no brainer as he has offers for multi-year deals elsewhere. However, since the Dbacks would have to offer at least $8M to Gonzo in arbitration, the team won't offer him arbitration unless he signs with another team before the arbitration deadline.
