Went as expected. I know Counsell was a type B player, what compensation do we get for that type of player? I believe Batista is a Type A
Both are type B players, so we get a supplemental first rounder (ie. between the first and second rounds).

San Diego and Boston are reportedly in trade talks on a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to San Diego for Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez.

What a horrible, HORRIBLE deal for San Diego. Kevin Towers should have rejected this deal the second it hit the table.

FSN's Kevin Rosenthal reports that SD will not include Peavy in any deal for Ramirez. Peavy is a bargain that is locked up for 3 more years. They would include Linebrink in a deal but talks between the two clubs have cooled drastically. The Dodgers also seem disinterested in acquiring Ramirez. Those were the two teams farm systems the Sox were scouting. SF doesn't have the talent and most other teams rumored in Ramirez trade talks are more focused on pitching.

Padres left fielder Dave Roberts has agreed to terms with the Giants on a three-year contract for $18 million, sources said Friday.

Roberts, who made $2.25 million this year, likely will play center field for the Giants, but San Francisco hasn't ruled out moving him to left in 2008.

The Padres offered arbitration to Roberts, 34, ensuring that they will get two compensatory picks for him in June 2007.

Roberts, a resident of Cardiff, led the Padres in stolen bases with 49 last season and tied Tony Gwynn's franchise record for triples with 13.

As the the team's leadoff man, Roberts set career highs in several categories, including games played (129), at-bats (499), batting average (.293), hits (146), runs scored (80) and on-base percentage (.360).

Padres General Manager Kevin Towers, who obtained Roberts before the 2005 season, has said that Terrmel Sledge would be the team's left fielder if the season opened today.

Do the Giants try to have the oldest overpaid team every year?

Door open for Batista's return

Tribune December 1, 2006- Miguel Batista’s time with the Diamondbacks may not be over after all. Although the sides have not spoken about a new contract in more than a month, the D-Backs offered arbitration to free agent right-hander Batista at the Friday deadline. The procedural move means that Batista could unilaterally return to the D-Backs in 2007, and it ensures they will receive a top draft pick if he does not.

Batista has a week to decide if he will accept the offer.

As expected, the D-Backs did not offer arbitration to Luis Gonzalez, who is being actively pursed on the free agent market.

Dependable Batista, 35, was 11-8 with a 4.58 ERA in a career-high 206 1/3 innings while making $4.75 million last season. He had 14 no-decisions, second-most in the major leagues, and was the most consistent starter behind Cy Young winner Brandon Webb.

As 2006 wound down, Batista expressed a desire to return to the D-Backs, but he also indicated he would test the market unless the D-Backs made him an offer he could not refuse.

While Batista and his representatives were unavailable for comment Friday, it is considered unlikely that he will accept arbitration because of the way the free agent market has taken off this fall.

Philadelphia recently signed Adam Eaton, who has missed much of the last two seasons because of injuries, to a three-year, $25 million contract. Randy Wolf signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Dodgers, and other so-called second-tier free agents Gil Meche and Ted Lilly could command as much as $10 million a season in a three-year package.

Contract talks with the D-Backs are believed to have stalled because the team did not want to commit to a long-term deal.

If Batista accepts the offer, his 2007 salary will be determined by an arbitrator. If Batista declines, the D-Backs will get a sandwich pick — a pick between the first and second rounds — in the June 2007 draft because Batista is classified as a Type B free agent.

As it stands entering the winter meetings Monday, the D-Backs have Webb, Livan Hernandez and newcomer Doug Davis as the top three in the starting rotation.

If Batista opts to return, he would claim a fourth spot in the rotation and push the D-Backs close to their expected $60 million-$65 million budget.

“If we end up with too many people and over budget, we could always make a trade,” D-Backs general manager Josh Byrnes said.

The Cardinals offered arbitration to Mulder who has until Thursday to accept or reject. Mulder is a type A free agent which means the Cards would recieve a sandwich pick if signed he's signed by another team.

Per Rotoword:

The Orioles made a one-year contract offer to free agent Luis Gonzalez on Friday night. The Dodgers are also believed to have made an offer to Gonzalez, and the Cardinals, Giants and Mariners may also be involved, though Seattle seems like a less likely destinate with Jose Guillen entering the fold. It's believed Gonzalez would prefer to play on the West Coast, so it's highly unlikely he'd accept a one-year deal from the Orioles. Baltimore could consider going to two or even three years, but they'd be much better off targeting someone younger.

Not entirely true. If he is signed by a team with a draft pick past #15, then the Cardinals would receive that first round pick (unless it was taken by another team with a type A free agent better than Mulder [in that case, the team who signed Mulder would give its second round pick to the Cards]). I believe that the Cards would also get a sandwich pick with the possible 1st rounder or second rounder.

That bit of info is wrong. He's a type B free agent.

I would still like to see Tracy get one more season. I watched Saunders pitch once last season and he looked good. Don't know enough about him to judge this trade. Who could we possibly get from the Rangers in exchange for pitching prospects? I highly doubt Byrnes will listen to any trades involving Owings unless they are willing to part with Teixera or Blalock (we'd obvioulsy have to throw in more then just Owings to get one of them). The only reason why I suggest such a trade is because there are rumors that the Rangers will listen to a trade for Teixera (his contract is almost up I believe). I'm unfamiliar with their prospects but I know we're not getting our hands on Diamond

I honestly don't understand how hard it would be to get the dbacks his medical records.

Especially considering it would seem like an obvious thing that teams would ask for. Could be percieved as a bit of a red flag.
