The last thing this team needs right now is to be stuck with another awful contract.

That's what everybody said when they signed Randy Johnson. But you're right the Dbacks don't have these ridiculous amounts of money to pay for average guys.

Are we a small market bottom feeder now?

No, they just can't spend irresponsibly. That his how they got into the current financial situation. In order for this team to get out of their financial hole they have to be fiscally responsible for the next few years while everyone else spends money like daddy just gave them the credit card.

They should be in the middle of the pack with regards to their payroll again this season.

Diamondbacks signed outfielder Dee Brown to a minor league contract.
Brown spent parts of seven seasons in the majors with the Royals, but he had showed little since 2004 before a big second half last season. He hit .339/.368/.549 with 14 homers in 67 games after the All-Star break at Double-A Wichita and then .438 with two homers in the postseason. It seems unlikely that he'll return to the majors with the Diamondbacks, but he might be able to make himself interesting to another team with a fast start in Triple-A.

Diamondbacks signed RHP D.J. Carrasco to a minor league contract.
Carrasco, one of the Royals' best pitchers in 2005, was a bust in Japan after signing a two-year deal with the SoftBank Hawks, giving up 17 runs and 22 hits in 10 1/3 innings last season. He might resurface with the Diamondbacks as a middle reliever.

I believe that is a realistic proposal. This injury which Mulder has experienced is nothing to take lightly. While he was a front of the rotation starter, the risk of handicapping the organization's total amount of monetary funds on someone who was hurt most of last year and might not return to form until the middle of next season (at the earliest) is not too bright. All we know is the money that was guaranteed to him and not the total amount he could have made from easily reached incentives.

In addition, the team has been improved this offseason. Davis will surprise everyone because he will fit into being a good middle of the rotation starter (something we lacked last year). Also, the fact that most of the dead weight (Gonzo, Green, Vargas, Estrada, etc) has been dropped off the team frees up more money to pay our debts and allow the young prospects, who we have heard so much about for so long, to play.

I agree that picking up rotation help would have greatly aided this team, but they really weren't there to be had. The asking price and injury concerns were just too great to pick up anyone.

So offer the guy an incentive laden deal. If he performs, he will be rewarded, if not, then it isn't an issue. Steve Glibert himself agreed that a incentive laden deal would make the most sense. Our major team needs were to improve the rotation and to get a power bat for the middle of the lineup. We've really accomplished neither. I know there are some people here that are high on the prospects of Davis, but his performance so far really hasn't excited me. He was a .500 pitcher last year, with an ERA around five. I just don't see how he is much of an upgrade on Miguel. In addition, the prospect of getting Johnson for the price described makes me ill. If we came out of the offseason with just one more quality starter I would like our chances in the division for next year. It's nice that we have lots of young talent but I guess I am impatient waiting for the team to build around it.

Julio closes strong season in Venezuela

With Luis Vizcaino potentially on his way to the Yankees as part of the trade for Randy Johnson, Jorge Julio becomes an even more important member of the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen for the 2007 season. The hard-throwing right-hander looks to be the club's top middle reliever and will be in the mix for the closer's job should Jose Valverde falter.

Julio joined the Leones del Caracas in mid-November and has given the club a dependable closer. He finished the season with a 3-1 record, 2.33 ERA and 12 saves. In 19 1/3 innings, he recorded 18 strikeouts and 12 walks. The veteran right-hander also pitched two scoreless innings in the first game of the playoffs.

Julio and 11 other D-backs prospects are playing in Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Here's how they've fared:

Mexican Pacific League

3B Brian Barden -- Barden last played on Dec. 3, when he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. That was part of a four-game stretch that saw him go 9-for-18 and raise his batting average to .291. He has not played for Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the postseason.

1B Jesus Cota -- Cota had a season-high six-game hitting streak near the end of the campaign and finished with a .260 average, nine home runs and 28 RBIs in 61 games. He has yet to make a playoff appearance for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

IF Agustin Murillo -- Murillo went 2-for-7 with a double and an RBI as the Yaquis de Obregon split their first two playoff games. He finished the regular season with a .321 average, four home runs and 18 RBIs in 49 games. Murillo also stole 12 bases and scored 25 runs.

Venezuelan Winter League

IF Javier Brito -- Brito went 1-for-3 on Dec. 28 in his final game of the season for the Caribes de Oriente. He ended with a .262 batting average, two home runs and four RBIs in 25 games. He also struck out 19 times in 61 at-bats.

2B Alberto Callaspo -- Callaspo, whom the D-backs refused to include in trade talks with the Yankees, overcame an 0-for-16 slump by finishing the regular season with a six-game hitting streak that saw him go 12-for-31 and raise his average to .276. He has continued his hot hitting in the playoffs, going 5-for-9 with an RBI in two games for the Aguilas del Zulia.

SS Alberto Gonzalez -- One of three Minor Leaguers the D-backs will send to the Yankees if the Johnson trade goes through, Gonzalez went 2-for-6 with two runs scored in the final game of the regular season for the Pastora de los Llanos on Dec. 16. Gonzalez finished the season with a .253 average, one home run, 14 RBIs and 24 runs scored in 51 games.

OF Carlos Gonzalez -- Gonzalez went 0-for-8 in the first two playoff games for the Aguilas del Zulia. He finished the regular season with a .318 batting average, nine home runs and 41 RBIs in 53 games.

RHP Enrique Gonzalez -- Gonzalez made his last start of the regular season on Dec. 17 and tossed five shutout innings in a no-decision. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four. The right-hander went 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA in seven appearances for the Tiburones de La Guaira.

C Miguel Montero -- Montero finished the regular season with a five-game hitting streak, including a 3-for-5 performance on Dec. 23, to raise his batting average to .247. He did not play in the postseason for the Azucareros del Este.
OF Gerardo Parra -- In a part-time role for the Aguilas del Zulia, Parra batted .322 with five RBIs and 10 runs scored in 18 games. He went 0-for-3 in his lone postseason appearance.

Russ Ortiz signs with the Giants. I can't wait until he pitches against the Diamondbacks. This from Rotoworld:

Giants signed RHP Russ Ortiz, who had been with the Orioles, to a one-year contract.

There was little doubt this was coming. The Giants will have to pay Ortiz only the minimum, as the Diamondbacks still owe him $16 million over the next two seasons. Ortiz will battle Jonathan Sanchez and Brad Hennessey for the lone opening in their rotation. It'd be pointless to carry him as a reliever, so he'll probably be released

If he makes the roster, it saves the Dbacks $300,000 grand....

And ensures the Giants of more losses....

With Willis and the 'Fins finishing a 1 year $6.45 million dollar deal I'm guessing that brings the probability of him being traded from 1% to 0% now?

Just read on ESPN.com Insider that we have interest in Victor Zambrano. Said that he has been auditioning for teams in the Dominican League and his fastball has topped out in the upper 80's. Also said our interest has leveled off due to the RJ trade. I say no thanks

No need for him anymore. I think this team is done picking up starters.

Well Gonzalez (PIT's) was traded to ATL for Adam LaRoche... So I guess that puts the Gonzalez for Tracy rumor to rest... Thankfully.

Definately want to see what Owings does in Spring Training. Kind of a full rotation so he may start the season in AAA

There is one spot open because of Batista's departure but I figure one of the Gonzalez's will get it with Nippert having a shot.

The 5th spot is open for battle but it's not cause Batista left. Batista and Claudio Vargas left and were replaced with Doug Davis and Randy Johnson. The 5th spot in the rotation is Enrique Gonzalezs to lose. He was our 5th for most the 2nd half last year and did average at best (although he was a rookie). I expect Juan Cruz to be his biggest challenger with Edgar Gonzalez, Micah Owings, Dustin Nippert, Dana Eveland, and Evan MacLane also all given a shot to make the rotation in ST.
