Former Ohio State basketball players Aaron Craft and Jacy Sheldon will be honored Saturday as part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Circle of Champions.
Craft, a graduate of Findlay Liberty-Benton who led the Buckeyes men’s team to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2011-14, holds program records for assists (694) and steals (337) and finished with 1,314 career points.
A two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Craft graduated from OSU’s medical school last year and, according to an OHSAA press release, is currently in residency at OSU with the goal of specializing in surgical and medical management of head and neck conditions.
Sheldon, a 2018 graduate of Dublin Coffman and three-time Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year, was a two-time all-Big Ten selection at Ohio State and a first-round draft pick of the WNBA’s Dallas Wings last year. Traded to the Connecticut Sun in February, Sheldon, who scored 2,024 points at Ohio State, also is the director of player development for the Buckeyes women’s team.
The other honorees are swimmer Hunter Armstrong from Dover, basketball players Kari Pickens and Kristin Ronai from Warsaw River View and former basketball official Phil Bova.
Pickens and Ronai, who is the OHSAA’s director of compliance, are sisters. Their mother, Caroline Daugherty, was added to the Circle of Champions last year.
The group will be honored during the Division VII final between Russia and Willoughby Cornerstone Christian.
The Circle of Champions was established in 2006 to recognize individuals who “had prominent roles in the history of Ohio interscholastic athletics,” according to the OHSAA.
“The honorees not only had outstanding achievements at the high school level, but also have had outstanding achievements after their prep careers ended, have displayed outstanding character and serve as role models,” the OHSAA says on its website.
Former Walnut Ridge girls basketball and volleyball coach Carol Smith will receive the OHSAA’s Naismith Meritorious Service Award during Friday night’s Division II final between Westerville North and Massillon Perry.
Smith spent 30 years at Walnut Ridge, starting both the basketball and volleyball programs and leading the basketball team to a Class AAA state runner-up finish in 1977. She also coached the school’s boys tennis team for four seasons.
