Can anyone tell me why OJ Anderson was traded to the Giants?

What did the Cardinals get in return?

Was he traded? I thought he just became a free agent and then signed with the Giants.

That may be. I dunno.

He was an excellent running-back. I was curious why the Cardinals let him go, one wany or another...

He was traded 4 games into the 1986 season. Says he was injured and played in only 12 games that year total and 4 the next barely over 3 YPC. he had played in only 9 games for us in 1985 and was being ripped by fans for running out of bounds to save his body.

Interestingly he never averaged under 4 YPC for us and never averaged OVER 3.48 YPC for the giants. I can't find what we got in trade.

I think we decided Stump Mitchell was a better RB at that stage of their careers.

I'll never forget the debut against Dallas.

He was traded, from my investigation, for 2 picks. Here is my research:

http://www.hickoksports.com/biograph/andrsnoj.shtml

He was traded during the 1986 season for 2 picks to the NYG after the 4th game. He had some foot problems & was limited to part time duties.

http://www.bbwc.com/History/draft.html#86 - The Giants 2 picks were 2nd & 7th rounders in 1987.

1987 shows two picks to St Louis. We sent one of them, a second rounder to Miami in 1987. The other was a 7th rounder that we drafted this guy- William Harris a TE from Bishop.

http://nflhistory.net/shared/draft1.asp?Team=29&Year=1987

Miami took Scott Schwedes Syracuse WR with the 2nd round pick they got from us.

We made this happen because Stump Mitchell was taken in the 9th round of 1981 & was coming into his own. http://www.azcardinal.com/history.htm

Any more questions?

You said you'd never forget Ottis Anderson's debut against Dallas. Maybe you remember this odd play. I still do.

He rips off a 15- or 20-yard gain, just abusing the Cowboys all along the way. They finally bring him down and when he gets up, he slams the ball down, it bounces away, and the ref flags him for delay of game.

He's still the only NFL player I've ever seen called for that.

As I recall it was OJ's first NFL carry and he busted it for 33 yards!

The 78 yd TD was magnificent. First NFL game rookie rushing record of 193 yards and we lost:mad:

The problem for him is his stats were great for 6 years and then he had one good year after. The success in NY you'd think would help him in some regard but his dropoff as a player was so steep when the injuries started.

Great player I'd have no objection to him making the HOF but I can see why he's not there yet.

I just have a hard time with guys like Joe Dellamalure(spelled wrong) and Elvin Bethea getting in before him.Joe D wasn't even the best OL on his team. The year before another OL,whose name i can't recall, got in that i thought was a joke. Those guys were very good players but not HOF type players.OJ has over 10,000 career yards and was a dominant player.I agree that he wasn't a 1st ballot player but he should be in before the guys who have been put in lately.

Mike Munchak was who i was thinking of.Jack Youngblood is another fringe inductee. He's most famous for playing with a briken leg.I think it was against the Cards too.

I just took a trip through memory lane (aka Cardinal Media Guide). Pretty interesting stuff:

1983 - Coach Jim Hanifan
Anderson gains 1,270 yds on ground and 459 as a receiver

1984 - Coach Jim Hanifan
Anderson gains 1,174 yds on ground and 611 as a receiver

1985 - Coach Jim Hanifan
Mitchell gains 1,006 yds on the ground and 502 as a receiver
Anderson gains 481 yds on ground and 225 as a receiver

1986 - Coach Gene Stallings (OC Jim Shofner)
Mitchell gains 800 yds on the ground and 276 as a receiver
Anderson gains 156 yds on ground and 91 as a receiver

1987 - Coach Gene Stallings (OC Jim Shofner)
Mitchell gains 781 yds on the ground and 397 as a receiver
Earl Ferrell gains 512 yds on ground and 262 as a receiver
(No mention of Anderson)

From the above numbers, it seems as though (1) OJ's productivity fell off (I seem to recall he was injured for part of 1985), (2) Stump emerged and (3) the new head coach and OC kind of sealed OJ's fate as a Cardinal.

Also - I've always felt that the emergence of Stalling and Shofner signalled the end of the vaunted Big Red running attack (from Trippi to Crow/Gautt to Roland to Metcalf to Anderson) as we knew it and went from a "featured tailback in the "I" setup to more of a split-back system with Stump Mitchell and Earl Ferrell shouldering an equal load.

We never were a dominant running team after that - until maybe (hopefully) now with Emmitt and Tugboat carrying the load.
