I want Dream to tell me the difference between 1080i as compared to 1080p? What exactly is the difference in resolution. I ask because you say that HDTV in 1080I played from your HDA2 on a 1080P TV is damn near even with a 1080P picture from a 1080P player being the PS3. The article backs up what you say.

If they are so close why even bother with a full 1080P TV? Can you also tell me what a 720P is just for the heck of it?

Ok Now Donald this is where you com in. I know without a shadow of a doubt Nick will post the answer in a way that makes it completely impossible to understand :) Donald I need you to translate it after he responds. Got it? Good!

There is no difference in resolution.

1080p just "draws" all 1080 lines every 1/60th of a sec instead of alternating fields of 540 lines every 1/30th of a second.
This just gives you better picture quality with fast moving action.

Primarily with 1080p you avoid the issue of combing.

This link has to do with DVD players but the combing issue applies to HDTV and the combing issue with an interlaced display. Scroll down to see the pictures in the gray section to understand combing.

:mulli:

Without getting technical, they say that you cannot see the differences between 1080i and 1080p unless you sit closer than the 1.5x the distance away from your TV, (as in if your TV is 50", and you sit 75" away or closer) or you have a 48" TV or larger.

Also, the difference between 1080i and 1080p depends on your TV's internal scaler. Some are great, some are crap.

Getting technical, the "i" in 1080i stands for interlaced. The "p" in 1080p stands for progressive. With a 1080i resolution, you don't techically get the picture at the same time. First you get the odd number of pixels "painted" on the screen, and then the even. 1080p does them both at the same time.

You want me to get any more techical. Google is your friend. :)

Donald, your services are not needed on this thread.

Oh, and 720p is 720 lines of progessive picture.

Think about it this way. Have you ever seen a computer monitor at 800x600 and then looked at the same screen in 1280x1024? Yes the picture is smaller, but the details that you see are very noticeable. You don't notice a "smaller" picture when we are dealing with TV's.

I'm guessing that even though "i" isn't happening at the same time, it has to be virtually imperceptible to the naked eye...so which is better? Does it really matter which you get?

So there isn't a difference depending on how close you sit?

Yes. Your eyes can see the differences, the closer you sit to your TV.

To my defense, the part I bolded in my original question was added to DCR's post in the edit...which was a full 5 minutes apart. Which means I had forgotten that I had already read the answer to my question...I mean...it WAS 5 minutes later...can't expect me to remember stuff that long.

But your post was almost an hour after my edit. Prosecution rests.. :)

Who knew?

I knew I had to get a 1080p TV. I didn't want anything smaller than 60", and I sit about 6 and a half feet away from my TV. Make sure that you take in account viewing distance when buying a TV. It can save you a ton of $$$.

Actually, the part that you bolded, was not a part of the edit.. the differences that I added between 1080i and 1080p is what was added. Prosecution rests again, after not initially seeing this gem.

Try changing your computer's resolution. See if you can see the resolution difference.

Me too... Is it better to shoot for 720 for 1080

Depends, mostly on price right now. 720p and 1080i is very similar, many people can't tell the difference, and many argue which is better. 1080p is obviously the best, but there are no TV shows that broadcast in 1080p, only HDDVD/Bluray/video games output 1080p right now.
