The No. 2 Sooners lost to Tennessee in game one on Friday night, 5-2. OU is still at 8-2 in SEC play, near the top of the league standings. Games 2 and 3 are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
The Oklahoma Sooners had only once lost more than one conference game in a season since 2015.
No. 10 Tennessee broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the eighth inning. Former Oklahoma Sooners catcher Sophia Nugent popped a one-out, two-run home run to break the tie, and Laura Mealer scored soon thereafter on a wild pitch to provide insurance. It wasn't necessary, as the Sooners' heart of the order was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, ending things.
Oklahoma had to rally to tie it at 2. Tennessee scored two runs in the second inning on Amayah Doyle's two-run home run to open things. OU pulled one run back in the third on Gabbie Garcia's sacrifice fly in the third with the bases loaded and tied it at two when Abigale Dayton hit a solo home run in the fifth.
The Sooners had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, but Hannah Coor was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second on Kasidi Pickering's single to right field. It was an aggressive base-running call for Patty Gasso, who tried to end the game in seven innings. But the ball went straight to right fielder Gabby Leach, who played the ball cleanly and fired a dart to home plate to catch Coor.
Sam Landry pitched the entire game for the Sooners but was tagged for eight hits, walked three, and hit two Tennessee batters. On the other hand, Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens entered in the third inning and finished the game, giving up just Dayton's home run.
OU lost five conference games last year in a 27-game set in the Big 12. This is their first year in the SEC. Even with those five losses, the Sooners won their fourth straight national championship in their fifth straight appearance in the title series.
