The Oklahoma softball team played one of its most interesting games of the season Wednesday night.
The Sooners still just have a single loss after knocking off Wichita State, 19-16, in a wild one. OU never trailed, but things were never comfortable, either, despite Oklahoma knocking in eight runs in the top of the first inning and chasing WSU starter Alex Aguilar before she finished the frame.
OU sent 11 batters to the plate and scored on three singles, a groundout, a triple, and a wild pitch. The Sooners added six more runs over the next two innings. Necessary ones, at that, as Wichita State countered each time. The Shockers scored two in the first inning, one in the second, and six in the third. The score was 14-9 after just three innings of play.
Oklahoma would score in just one more inning, but it was plenty. Nelly McEnroe-Marinas scored on a single in the fifth. During the play, a Wichita State error also led to Kasidi Pickering coming across the plate. Ella Parker knocked in another run later in the inning, and Abigale Dayton scored on another WSU error to give the Sooners five in the frame.
Wichita State scored in every inning but the seventh as Sam Landry retired three of the four Shockers batters she faced in the final frame close things out. In all, Landry threw the final four innings of the game after Kierston Deal got the start. Landry allowed three earned runs (five runs total) on six hits, two walks, and she recorded five strikeouts to pick up her 10th win of the season.
Gabbie Garcia had the biggest night for OU. She went 3 for 5 with a home run, four RBI, and three runs. Pickering had just one hit, but she also walked four times and scored four runs. McEnroe-Marinas and Maya Bland each had three hits.
Oklahoma is back in SEC play starting Friday for a three-game set in a top 10 showdown against the Tennessee Volunteers in Norman.
