The Oklahoma Sooners have retooled their roster through the transfer portal this offseason, most notably on the offensive side of the ball, where Oklahoma added a starting quarterback, several wide receivers and tight ends expected to make an impact, and a couple of offensive linemen who will factor into the two-deep depth chart. But the Sooners may not be done yet, as the spring transfer portal is set to open next weekend.
On a recent episode of The Oklahoma Breakdown with Teddy Lehman and Gabe Ikard, Jim Nagy joined the show and discussed the new structure and organization of the Oklahoma Football front office. There's a lot to love about the way Oklahoma is streamlining its player acquisition efforts under Nagy. How the Sooners will continue to develop their roster will happen over the next couple of recruiting classes. However, Nagy spoke to the more immediate needs of the Oklahoma Sooners, particularly through the spring portal window.
"We're going to be really strategic with it." Nagy told Lehman and Ikard. "There's a couple spots on the roster that we certainly would like to upgrade. But we don't know what's going in the portal yet. I'm getting a lot of communication from agents on players and guys that are in the portal already and guys they think will go into the portal. We're trying to watch all those guys as we get that communication from the agent group just so we're ready. We don't know if they're going to be in there or not. But we will be strategic."
"To me, at this point, there are going to be players that clearly upgrade our starting units," Nagy said. "We've got a couple of down-the-line depth needs, and we'll address those if we can. Maybe they'll just be scholarships or kind of low-money. But we have some money earmarked for starter-level players that would significantly upgrade the roster, and we'll see if any players shake free that way. But if they are, we'll be ready for them."

The Oklahoma Sooners will certainly have some needs to address. The injury to Javonnie Gibson certainly creates a need at wide receiver. The Sooners don't have a lot of proven production on the roster to begin with, and Gibson was expected to have a huge season for OU after creating a palpable buzz during spring ball.
Oklahoma's been looking for interior offensive line depth in the cycle. But as Nagy describes, they aren't just looking for depth pieces. The Sooners think they can improve their projected starting lineup and have set aside the resources to make a significant splash in the transfer portal if an upgrade becomes available.
The spring transfer portal window will open on April 16 and run for a week. Players can enter the portal during that time but don't have to be committed when the portal ends. The Sooners could be adding players well into the summer if they find options that make sense for the roster and can help them return to title contention in 2025.
