Ol' Dirty Bastard Dead
By Nolan Strong
Date: 11/12/2004 6:30 pm

Wu-Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard passed away today (November 13).

While details are sketchy, sources told AllHipHop.com that the rapper collapsed and died in a Manhattan recording studio.

Ol' Dirty had complained of chest pains, but the cause of death was not immediatley known.

The rapper was two days shy of reaching his 36th birthday.

An autopsy will be conducted Sunday officials said.

Jones was in 36 Records when he said he was having trouble breathing and collapsed.

An ambulance was summoned to the 5th floor where Jones had collapsed near a pool table.

Paramedics tried, but could not resuscitate the rapper.

"This evening I received a phone call that is every mothers worst dream. My son Russell Jones passed away," ODB's mother Cherry Jones said. "To the public he was known as Ol Dirty Bastard but to me he was known as Rusty."

Mrs. Jones labeled her son the most generous soul on earth and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.

"Russell was more then a rapper he was a loving father, brother, uncle and most of all son," Mrs. Jones added.

"All of us in the Roc-A-Fella family are shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic death of our brother and friend, Russell Jones, Ol' Dirty Bastard," Roc-A-Fella CEO Dame Dash said. "Russell inspired all of us with his spirit, wit, and tremendous heart. He will be missed dearly, and our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to his wonderful family. The world has lost a great talent, but we mourn the loss of our friend."

The eight other members of the veteran rap group appeared at The Theater at the Continental Airlines Arena for their first joint East Coast appearance in five years, where Ol' Dirty was scheduled to perform.

Sources said the rapper failed to appear for unknown reasons.

One of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, the 35-year-old helped lay down the foundation for some of the most influential Hip-Hop in history.

He brought an air of humor to the macho world of rap, yet maintained enough integrity to be taken serious amongst a fickle Hip-Hop audience.

The Brooklyn born rapper was featured on Wu-Tang’s groundbreaking album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

Shortly afterwards, he was shot in the stomach by another rapper during an argument on the street in Brooklyn.

He recovered and released the classic Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, which spawned the hit singles "Brooklyn Zoo" and "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," which powered the album to gold status.

In 1998 the rapper further solidified his place in Hip-Hop history. That year, he rushed out of a recording studio to help save the life of a four-year-old girl who had been hit by a car and was trapped underneath.

The next day he appeared at the Grammy Awards and rushed the stage during Shawn Colvin’s acceptance speech for her Grammy Award winning song “Sunny.”

Dressed in a red suit, the rapper told the crowd that Wu-Tang shouldn’t have lost their Grammy to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and then uttered the now famous words: “Wu-Tang is for the children.”

In 1998 he was shot again in Brownsville, Brooklyn, after two robbers pushed their way into his girlfriend's apartment. The bandits stole money and jewelry and shot ODB once. The bullet entered his back and went through his body, all superficial wounds.

After being treated in a New York emergency room, he ignored doctor’s warnings and left the hospital.

He was arrested several more times the following year for various charges, including threatening bouncers at the House of Blues in Los Angeles and for lounging on his balcony in the nude in Berlin, Germany. No charges were filed in that case.

Later that year, he was arrested and charged with attempted murder, after police claimed he jumped out of his car and started shooting at them. Those charges were dismissed when the police failed to present credible evidence.

In October of 2000, the rapper was almost finished a stint in rehab when he made a run for it, spending a month as a fugitive, during which time he performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in front of hundreds of stunned fans.

He left the premise that evening but was captured a short time later in Philadelphia, singing autographs in a McDonald's parking lot.

He was extradited to New York, where he stood trial. In April of 2001, he received a sentence of two to four years in state prison.

After emerging triumphantly from jail and rehab, the rapper inked a deal with Roc-A-Fella Records in May of 2003.

I'm happy to be here,” Ol' Dirty said at the press conference. “I thought I wasn't gonna be able to touch another microphone. I'm happy my eyes are still open."

The rapper also had launched his own clothing line, Dirty Wear.

The news comes as Hip-Hop community was mourning the passing of another rapper, Mac Dre, who was shot to death in Kansas City.

I loved ODB, and I always hoped he'd overcome all of his personal demons and win in the end. I had a shot for both him and the Cardinals yesterday. RIP Russell Jones, :(

In an outpouring of love and appreciation, fans across the world have begun paying tribute to Ol' Dirty Bastard who died suddenly this weekend.

Within just hours of the news of the sudden collapse and death of Old Dirty Bastard, fans both in the U.S. and abroad have begun offering tributes to the irreverent rapper in word and song. Russell Jones, known to fans as ODB aka Ol' Dirty Bastard aka BZA aka Unique Ason aka Osirus aka Dirt McGirt aka Dirt Dog aka Big Baby Jesus, was embraced worldwide in spite of his unpredictable and outrageous behavior.

From his outburst at the 1998 Grammys, to being sentenced in New York in 2001 for drug possession followed by another sentence of two years in prison for violating his probation and possession of body armor in California, to his recent signing to Roc-A-Fella Records ODB continued to endear himself to hip-hop fans.

Stateside, rapper Lexlife of ODB's Brooklyn hometown offers up one of the first tribute songs for the late rapper [listen]. Recollecting ODB's irreverent antics and lifestyle, Lexlife raps:

"I remember when I first heard 'Shame on a ni99a'/ told me not to be scared to change on a ni99a / I just let my own style and get deranged on a ni99a... / I was happy for you the first day you got free, /Dame, a Roc chain and a bucket of chicken."
On one international memorial webpage, fans from locals as far away as New Zealand, Italy, The Netherlands, Australia, Africa and Sweden offered their condolences.

"No word could express the sadness of the international Hip-Hop movement," remarks mr.G of Paris, France.

"I'll tip my 40 in your memory," said Assassin Allah of Toronto.

And one fan named BJ expressed his sentiments to the late rapper, who would have been 36 years old today.

"I've got my iron flag at half mast today. Rest in Peace."

ODB CD Due in January

"Osirus" is the debut release from rapper's mother's label

Osirus, a new album of Ol' Dirty Bastard material recorded during the six months before his death, is set to hit stores January 4th. The fifteen-track CD, named for one of the late rapper's aliases, will be the debut release from JC Records, the label formed after ODB's death by his mother Cherry Jones and manager Jarred Weisfeld. The album's first single, "Pop Shots (Wu-Tang)," was produced by Gang Starr's DJ Premier. The record also features guest spots by Kdef (Ghostface Killah), the Mountain Brothers' Chops and Mark Ronson, as well as skits by Rahzel.

Weisfeld suggested the possibility of future ODB CD and DVD releases, saying in a statement, "Dirty's legacy will continue."

ODB, who collapsed and died November 13th in New York City, was also recording his Roc-A-Fella debut, but, according to a label spokesman, there are no current release plans.

Autopsy: Rapper O.D.B. Had Drug Overdose

1 hour, 42 minutes ago

NEW YORK - The death of rapper O.D.B. was deemed an accident by the medical examiner, who said Wednesday that he died from the combined effects of cocaine and a prescription painkiller.

O.D.B., whose legal name was Russell Jones, died at a Manhattan recording studio Nov. 13.

He died "as a result of intoxication by the combined effects of cocaine and Tramadol, a prescription painkiller but not a narcotic," said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.

"The manner of death is an accident," she added.

O.D.B. complained of chest pains before collapsing at the studio, and was dead by the time paramedics reached him. He was just days short of his 36th birthday.

O.D.B., also known as Ol' Dirty Bastard, was a founding member of the rap group the Wu-Tang Clan.

With his unorthodox delivery — alternately slurred, hyper and nonsensical — O.D.B. stood out even in the nine-man Clan, and as a solo artist he released hit singles such as "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and "Got Your Money."

He had been working on his comeback album for more than a year and was almost finished.

O.D.B. was the latest in a string of rappers to meet an untimely death, among them Jam Master Jay of Run DMC, who was fatally shot in late 2002, and Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, who were both shot to death in the late 1990s. Those killings remain unsolved.

ODB OD'd.

What a waste.

Who's next? DMX? He just got arrested...again.

Can't seem to drive his SUV without driving it into someone else's car, driving it while on alcohol and drugs (Valium), driving without a license (suspended multiple times), etc.

Sheesh. Get a life already.

So sad, he had so much of his life left but he threw it all away on drugs and booze.

Why would anyone want to live like that?

Wow, I know nothing about ODB, but after reading this thread, I'd have to agree with you Ryan. What a sad way to live! It makes me wonder what made him feel like he had to abuse his body that way? Very sad.

No one ever says I want to be a junkie when I grow up. Don't let drugs get in the way of your dreams.

Full Wu-Tang Clan To Guest On Posthumous ODB Record
Thursday February 10, 2005 @ 03:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

It seems like just yesterday we talked about RZA pining for the days of Wu-Tang past. Acting as the spokesman and historian for nine-member hip-hop collective the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA has written a Wu-book, organized Wu-reunion concerts and DVDs and now it seems he’s pulled his musical comrades back into the Wu-studio.

RZA told Billboard.com that all eight surviving members will be featured on a track honouring Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who died last year. With Ghostface Killah the only member left to record his vocals, the track — tentatively titled "I Go Through Life" — will be the first to feature the full Wu-Tang line-up in several years. It’s likely to appear on the upcoming posthumous ODB record — that’s the "official" record that Dirty was working on at the time of his death, not the mix-tapes and unreleased recordings being issued by his mother.

ODB had been working on the material since his release from jail in 2003 for Roc-A-Fella Records, though it now seems the finished product will be released through a partnership of the Wu-Tang Records imprint and the Damon Dash Music Group. When Dash began work on finishing up the LP (which already featured Ludacris and The Neptunes), he brought in RZA as a producer.

RZA also told Billboard that Quentin Tarantino had heard the big reunion track in the studio (RZA scored the director’s Kill Bill series) and got chills. The producer did not say why Tarantino’s chills were significant. The album is likely to run 13 to 16 tracks, with "Intoxicated," featuring Method Man, Raekwon and Macy Gray, expected to be the first single.

The as-yet untitled LP is due out March 22.
