Are there any card fan vets here from chicago that could explain the stadium situation back in the day with the cards?

From what I can remember hearing---- the cards were all set to move out of Comiskey park and move into Dyke Stadium on the northside (where northwestern university plays) but Halas wouldn't allow it. Apparently instead the cardinals played in soldier field for their last season in chicago while the bears played in wrigley still. The next year the cards bolted for st. louis and the bears moved in the already modified soldier field for good.

So....the bears then single handedly muscled the cards out of town? There actually might be a chance the cards would still be in chicago today if not for "papa bear".......and if so--- is this why old man bidwill seems to love the Bears/Cards matchups?

curious if anyone could describe this a little more!

Just one point of clarification: the Bears played at Wrigley Field through the 1970 season...they didn't move into Soldier Field (at least, full-time) until 1971.

Welcome!

I will have a chili dog and a slice of pie. Wash it down with a nice glass of "system".

i dont know what that means......?

I get that a lot.

Mostly it's the tradition on this board that a new poster or "newbie" (you) gets the first round of food and drink at our fictional place of eating.

I took the request for food and made a bad Denny Green joke.

hmmm....i DO remember hearing halas loaned the packers money to stay afloat..

"Halas traded Layne for two draft choices and $50,000 which history has indicated he desperately needed. It turned out that Halas still owed the Bidwill's, who owned the Chicago Cardinals, $50,000 from a loan Charlie Bidwill had given to Halas to save Bidwill's beloved Bears."

Didn't Charles Bidwill loan Halas money to stay afloat at one point?

You are correct. Halas wanted no part of the Cards playing north of Madison avenue.
If I remember the story right Mrs. Bidwill remarried after Charly Bidwills death in 1947. According to my Dad, Halas approached her with an offer of money to move out of Chicago.
My Dad HATED the Bears and held Halas personally responsible for "forcing" his beloved Cardinals to move. He continued to follow the team and started taking road trips to St.Louis a couple of times a year. He started taking me with him when I was about 12.
He died in 1982. I now carry the torch and my Son who is now 32 is a devoted Big Red fan.

I wonder how many of us Bear-hating, Cardinal-loving fans there are in illinois still

I am! I am too lazy to put my two cents in but the Readers Digest version is that Halas did in fact drive Bill Bidwill out of town. If my memory serves me correctly, Bill owned the team by himself at that point as the deal was Stormy got Sportmans's Park and some real estate nearby and Bill got the team . Stormy was "known" to be a pretty bright guy and at the time I think the track had more long term upside.

Bringing the Vikings into the mix had some connection with the team winding up in St. Louis
