PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Carlos Oliveras has a home run ball specially marked to assure authenticity.

It just doesn't have Barry Bonds' autograph as the slugger refused to sign the ball.

The 25-year-old Air Force serviceman bought his lucky ticket because he wanted to see Bonds chase Babe Ruth on the career home run list. Oliveras had little idea he'd be the one being chased -- by fans, by media -- after snagging career home run No. 713.

When the San Francisco Giants' slugger hit a mammoth shot in the sixth inning off Philadelphia right-hander Jon Lieber to put him one behind the Babe on Sunday night, the ball bounced around Section 202 and into Oliveras' hands.

"I never thought I was going to be lucky like that," Oliveras said.

This was the first game of the three-game series Oliveras and a friend attended. He bought the ticket two days ago because he's a Bonds fans and wanted to see a slice of history. Then he was part of it.

"Everybody was looking on the floor," Oliveras said. "The ball bounced to me. I grabbed the ball and I stuck it between my legs. Everyone was still looking around."

Oliveras, a native of Puerto Rico, said no one immediately tried to snag the ball because he had it hidden. When the media and Phillies security discovered he caught the ball, other Phillies fans -- many who spent the series jeering the sullen slugger -- started yelling for him to throw the ball back.

"It made me nervous," he said.

Oliveras, an Airman 1st Class who lives on McGuire Air Force Base in Fort Dix, N.J., paid $20 for his seat in Section 202, Row 7, Seat 24.

He said he is a Bonds fan and would probably keep the ball. He hoped it would have Bonds' signature.

Bonds said no when he was asked at his news conference if he would sign the ball if a fan wanted an autograph. Moments later, when an official asked if there were any more questions, Oliveras piped up:

"Will you sign my ball?"

Bonds smirked and said nothing.

After his news conference, Bonds shook Oliveras' hand and took a picture with him.

"I'm happy because I got a picture and he shook my hand," he said.

There was one signature needed though. Oliveras had to sign a waiver for Bonds' reality show.

What I really hate is how ESPN has been slurping Barroids recently. I know they have a reality TV show that stars him (which I refuse to watch or have on the Television at my house) but that does not mean that everyone needs to be in awe of him.

It is simply pathetic how quickly they can be chastizing a player, then turn around and praise him just because of a TV show that is aired on their channel.

Sadly, I think all of his records are going to stand and after a few years everyone will forget about the allegations against him.

Free Barry and if he breaks the record he does, but people are making him into the biggest story baseball has ever had. I just say give him a little pub when he deserves it leave him alone the rest of the time.

Everyone says he cheats: How do you explain he is still most feared hitter in baseball at 40 something and no roids?

Publicity this thing to death....

MLB does not test for growth hormones. Read "Game of Shadows.'

Bondscenter has been getting a bit ridiculous. I don't know about you guys but I could really care less anymore whether or not the breaks Ruth's record or about the steroid issue. The whole issue has gotten so clouded and predictable that it's barely worth discussing yet somehow Barry pccupies about 30% of sports programming which leads me to believe I must be the only one not watching this crap.

I could care less about Barry not signing a guy's autograph. He's probably done it 1,087,352 times before this to kids and adults of all sort so why should I be surprised now?

I think I read somewhere in one of our local newspapers that after that little court battle over his last ball, Bonds only signs balls that he knows are going to charity.

The guy was probably jeering Bonds all game, but when he catches the ball, he's now Bonds' best friend?

Juan Pierre just robbed Bonds of #714. I love that stuff.

Just saw it on Bondscenter. Good stuff

It's on WGN. The Giants fans are booing Pierre. Like he is just supposed to intentionally throw games so that Bonds can tie the Babe.

I used to consider myself a Giants fan because their PCL team played here. Firebirds.

How did I do that?? Nothing is more deploarable than Giant fan.

It's a tie between Lakers, Cowboys and Giants fans

I agree mostly with this list, I'd add Raiders fan right next to Cowboy fan though.

Also, apathetic towards the NBA, so I can't hate a team.

I'd add fans of the Canadian Hockey teams to this list.

I would have paid good money to see an Edmonton/Calgary series. The smack run there would have been hilarous. The town that Invented the Mullet vs. the World's Largest Trailer Park.
