Field Yates of ESPN provided us with an eye-popping stat about the lack of production from the Indianapolis Colts tight end position in recent years, which we all know is a massive need this offseason.
Believe it or not, the Colts haven't had a tight end on their roster reach 500 receiving yards since the 2018 season, according to Yates. The tight end who eclipsed that mark was Eric Ebron, with 827 yards that year.
To put into more context just how little of an impact that position group provided in the passing game this past season, the four tight ends on the Colts roster in 2024 didn't even reach the 500-yard receiving mark. That group totaled 467 combined yards, and league-wide, there were 25 individual tight ends who had more receiving yards than that during the regular season.
"Our inability to control the middle of the field," said GM Chris Ballard after the season, "which we've gotta be able to do, I’ve got to be able to give Shane [Steichen] and them a guy that can really control the middle of the field, that teams have to account for and defend.”
The good news for the Colts is that this year's tight end class is quite deep. The first-round options for the Colts could include Tyler Warren or Colston Loveland, but The Athletic's Dane Brugler mentioned that he sees there being 5-6 starting-caliber tight ends in this year's class.
A strong pass-catching presence at the tight end position can add a whole different dimension to an offense and is another element that defenses have to account for. Beyond that player's own production, the attention they draw can help create opportunities for others as well.
