Nice win. I'm glad Lyon pitched well. Maybe he was saving his stuff for the regular season. The entire pitching staff did great, plus it's nice to see some power from the offense.

Sweet, the D-Backs are on pace for a 162-0 record. Let's keep it up.

Wish I got radio reception in the office.

Great win in a good pitching matchup on opening day. Two top 5 pitchers in the NL going at it and the D-Backs are able to hit 3 solo HRs to win it

Honoring someone from the Reds that died if I remember right.

Edit: Nuxhall was the name.Thank you DVR!
Joe Nuxhall was an ace pitcher on the Reds back in the '50's and a long-time announcer.

Regarding the postings earlier in this threat about Reynolds' two strikeouts, he and Upton each struck out twice. Young struck out three times (in the leadoff spot).

Apparently, that's going to be part of the status quo this year.

Nice to see that the pen went three hitless innings, just what we need in order to win these close games. I can't say I'm a fan of this off day right after Opening Day, what a tease.

can't we be happy? we got a win against one of the most underrated pitchers in the league IMO.

I was reacting to a previous post singling out my favorite D'back Mark Reynolds' two strikeouts, which were not the highest for our team that day.

Reynolds has the potential to be a 40+ HR hitter and that will include strikeouts. He said, near the end of spring training, that he was going back to his natural hitting style (to maximize his power), even if it includes strikeouts.

Half-full, not half-empty.

I agree. They were talking about it on the Reds broadcast yesterday during the rain delay... If Harang pitched in a large market like for the Mets-Yankees-Cubs-Dodgers-Angels, etc. He would probably be known as one of the star pitchers of the league.

We have a day off today which is weird. Haren will be making his debut against Bronson Arroyo.

his breaking ball is sooo nasty. i have a feeling reynolds will hit those better this year, but thats like saying you are stronger and then asked to lift a semi-truck. give all the guys 2 weeks before we talk about being worried.thats all im saying.

Wonderful, Lyon...

Never liked it when Lyon comes in... I was hoping he would have a good year and we could pawn him off on someone... but I doubt it.

Pena will be the closer in three weeks: book it.

Too bad it won't be soon enough.

I could also see Scherzer being called up to take over the spot at the All-Star break.

A single and two homers . . . and a blown save.

Yup, I think BoMel was a wee bit premature in naming Lyon his closer at the start of Spring Training. He had everything to gain and nothing to lose by using Spring Training for what it's intended.

Instead, it was prime to become an issue of the Manager saving face throughout Lyon's consistent poor performances.

Damn, I hate to see people do dumb things.

Edit: the live feed while I was at the computer during the bottom of the 9th showed a single and two homeruns, rather than a three-run homer. Either way . . .

No one mentioned the inexcusable plate appearance by Byrnes in the ninth (in this thread at least). Affelt needed to throw 7 balls - no strikes - in order for Byrnes to get himself out. What a tool. The walk was handed to him and he flat out refused the guaranteed RBI in order to take a shot at grandeur. Idiot!

It seems that for every good thing he does (home run on Monday) he does 10 stupid things. Oh well - he is ours for a few more years.

Got this from the Yahoo wrapup. Hopefully CoJack is okay.

1B Conor Jackson was taken to a hospital for treatment after the game. He’s been sick for several days and had trouble breathing.

I'm rewatching the game on FSN (tuned in for the 9th inning in the live game...yeah) and God, we should of won this game. Haren was great, Qualls was great and Pena was great. Byrnes in the top of the 9th...WTF!!!!???!

I feel bad for Lyon that he melted down there in the 9th. I say, let Lyon close a couple more games (try and get an apperance or two in there against the Rockies) and if he still struggles, try Pena.
