Richie Saunders, Ore-Ida limited edition tater tots
Brigham Young University has another reason to take home the 2025 men's NCAA Tournament win this year — and it's a tasty one.
On Thursday, March 27, BYU’s Cougars will face off against Alabama State University’s Crimson Tide as part of the Sweet 16 finalists, marking the college’s longest run in the tournament in almost 15 years.
To celebrate, Ore Ida is giving away free tater tots nationwide during the game, from tip-off to final buzzer, which is approximately four hours. Fans can find links to redeem the tots on Ore-Ida’s social media channel bios. Although this is an exciting offer, it’s not a random choice.

BYU’s forward Richie Saunders is the great-grandson of Francis Nephi Grigg, the inventor of the tater tot. According to Sports Illustrated, Griggs created the beloved potato poppers at a frozen food plant in Ontario, Ore.
In honor of Saunders, who has become known as “Tot King,” and his connection to the brand, Ore-Ida will officially change its name to “Ore-Richie” to celebrate his stellar performance in the tournament thus far. According to a press release obtained by PEOPLE, the brand has pledged to keep the new name throughout BYU’s run in the tournament.

Along with the free tots and name change, the brand has another initiative in preparation for BYU’s potential win. If the school wins the tournament overall, Ore-Ida will release the limited edition “Richie’s Tater Shots,” a fitting reference to the professional basketball player’s signature jumpshot. This release would mark the brand’s first limited-edition offering in over 20 years, so the win could be good for Saunders and the potato-based company.
Tater tots aren’t the only free goodies fans can score during the tournament. Many food brands are leaning into electric sports energy and offering free or discounted food and drink products to munch and sip on during each game.
