Ortiz on the 15-day DL

With a rib cage strain - or something, they aren't sure, he's had it for a couple weeks - they'll get it checked out next week. (Next week?! Guess they're in no hurry to get it checked out.)

They designated Herges, called up Koplove (who had by no means gotten things straightened out in Tucson) AND -- Brandon Medders! He will make his big league debut out of our bullpen. We should watch this closely - he is 1 year and 14 days removed from labrum surgery, and if he's any good and they overuse him, it'll be criminal.

The weird thing is - Claudio Vargas, who has no business being on a big league roster, will start for Ortiz Tuesday vs. the Giants. Vargas, with his 10.18 ERA and 2.14 WHIP.
Not Cormier, who was a starter until this year, with his 2.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP and 2.2K per BB ratio.

I am mystified that Vargas is even allowed to dress with the team, much less that he'd get the start over Cormier.

I swear that fans could make a lot better decision that teams sometimes about who to put on the roster and who to play.

Cormier always got lit up when he started, but atleast the team would have a chance with him pitching.

I think we need to trade Tracy or Clark for a starter or reliever.

My only guess as to why Cormier wasnt placed in the rotation to fill in for Ortiz is because he's the only reliever who's been consistent.... True... Vargas will be fortunate to last more than 4 innings in his next start, however, we're probably need to depend on Cormier a lot during this upcoming series to wear down his arm even further... I hope Melvin and Co. use Medders correctly... Dont immediately bring him in during a pressure situation, but gradually ease him in during a "mop-up" role (of course I prefer during a game in which the Dbacks are ahead by 5+ or more in the later innings).....
