Denver East's Jamiko Verner shoots over Mullen's Terrence Dent. Verner made a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer to win it.
Jamiko Verner practices a half-court shot every day at practice. Wednesday night, it was for real.
Verner, a guard, hit a stunning three-pointer at the buzzer from just inside the half-court line to help the top-seeded Angels avoid Mullen's upset bid in a 51-49 victory in a Class 5A third-round game at the Budweiser Events Center.
Verner was mobbed by his teammates as the officials checked to make sure the shot counted, and Mullen players stood stunned. When the official signaled the shot was good, East fans went crazy.
Fifth-seeded Mullen had trailed the entire game until Terrence Dent made a three-pointer with 2 seconds remaining, coming out of a Mustangs timeout. Verner then launched his shot just before the buzzer to get the Angels (20-5) into the quarterfinals.
"I just looked up after Terrence hit that three- point shot and asked my teammates to get me the ball," said Verner, who finished with 10 points. "We had to push it up court. My only thought was that I don't want to lose this game because this is my senior year. I'd be upset if I had to go home."
East's poor free-throw shooting nearly sent it home early.
