any thoughts or advice on purshasing a (60 inch or so) plasma tv? I'm deciding between a 58 inch panasonic ($3,400), 58 inch samsung ($3,900) with wireless capabilities, or a 60 inch LG ($2,900). The LG model has a great picture, but I haven't ever heard of them.

Any thoughs or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

This would be better placed in the Tech forum. But Panasonic makes the best plasma.

If I'm not mistaken, LG is General Electric, renamed.

According to Home Theater Magazine (a mag I've subscribed to for about 12 years), the professional line of Pioneer KURO plasmas are the best plasmas ever made. Period. Nothing else on the market even comes close.

Those are nice plasma's I must admit. However, for the size that he is looking at, he would be spending nearly double what the prices he listed. The 50" Kuro runs around $4k, and the 60" closer to $6k.

For the TV's that he listed. I'd take the Panasonic everytime.

Thanks to all. I'll keep looking for more comments.

Frankly, that LG looks great. I'm just a little leery that I've never heard of them. However, if Linderbee is right and that is GE it might allow me to take the plunge. And you can bet I'm going to look into the pioneer.

Keep the comments coming please.

okay, now I'm leaning toward the panasonic. I'm so confused.

I think that the first thing that you do when deciding on a TV, is to decide on a budget. For example, that 60" Kuro can be found at certain sites for around $4700 (not authorized retailers). I'd consider that if you can swing that much. I'd have to see that Kuro in action before I could comment about that. Pioneer has always made a pretty good plasma, but for the price, Panasonic has always been my #1. Also, when determining a budget, be sure that includes extended warranty. It is a must these days.

LG has been around for a while, making lots of electronics. I know them more from cellphones than anything. The best piece of advice I can give regarding electronics, is stick to buying from a company that does it's main business in that market. i.e., I'd buy a Dell laptop, but not a Dell TV.

Use the internet to find reviews from customers. I've seen some TV's at a great price and thought about buying them, until I saw user reviews. Amazon, Newegg, buy.com, circuitcity.com and cnet are all great sites. Search those sites for the model numbers you are interested in to see if users have any reviews. Newegg is my fave resource.

And of course, the best advice I can give you is to always trust your own opinion. If you are down to two that have similar features and reviews, go with the one you think has a better picture. I'm not a fan of plasmas myself, they seem dull. I'm still in the rear projection HD fanclub since you still need to take up space anyways for the receivers, dvd players etc.

LG is the second biggest Korean electronics consortium behind Samsung. As far as I know their TV business has nothing to do with GE.
yeah, I googled it & found not much on that. Whoever told me that was wrong, obviously. They recently entered into an agreement to share patents & stuff, but I heard that at least a year ago. Oh, well. Won't be the last time I'm wrong!

Consumer Report has consistantly listed Panasonic as the #1 rated Plasma for at least the past 2 years.

Yep, and they have held the biggest market share for that time as well.

They used to be Lucky Goldstar back in the 80's. If you remember Goldstar made very low end line of electronics. They changed their name to LG in the 90's to try and shed the bad radio image.

Ah. I knew it was an old line in different packaging.

Sorry GE, for saying it was you!

LG bought Zenith back in the 90's.

I was also told by 2 different sales people when looking at my TV last year that LG used to make most of the glass for other plasma / LCD manufactures.

Also check this site for A LOT of info, if you haven’t already.

I read Comsumer Reports and various tech tech sites on the internet that all praised the Panasonic. Last year I bought the 50" and couldn't be happier with the picture.
