Fox Houston reports that Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted in Montgomery County, Texas, for reckless or negligent injury to a child.
According to Fox Houston's Isiah Carey, the charges stem from allegations that Peterson "beat his young son."

That's what is being reported. I wouldn't think and old fashioned style spanking with a switch would get him indicted though. There's probably more to it than that.

If I'm not mistaken Adrian Peterson is a country boy. My mom grew up on a farm and she s told me stories of having to walk out and pick the switch and bring it so she could get spanked with it. That's just a country thing

I am curious if this child is being raised by the wife of AP or one of his baby-mamas. This could certainly be a case of abuse or a money chase by an ex or the work of someone who feels the biblical principle "spare the rod, spoil the child" is child abuse. This one will be interesting. You wouldn't think they could get an indictment in Texas unless there was some basis.

It was Adrian's son not daughter but a different one.

When the 4-year-old boy returned to Minnesota, his mother took him to a doctor. The police report said the boy told the doctor Peterson had hit him with a branch from a tree.
The doctor told investigators that the boy had a number of lacerations on his thighs, along with bruise-like marks on his lower back and buttocks and cuts on his hand.
The police report says the doctor described some of the marks as open wounds and termed it “child abuse.” Another examiner agreed, calling the cuts “extensive.”

I was spanked as a child and probably had some red marks that went away after several minutes. Never had lacerations and open wounds that remained days after the incident.

Agree. However, there is a point where it becomes over the top... To inflict the type of damage on a 4 year old that those pics appear to show, that is definitely over the top... Sad situation...

I certainly had more marks on me when my dad took the strap to my butt but times have changed. If, IF, he did that to his 4 year old child as punishment or discipline then I guess it is child abuse. I can't really think of a justification to do that to a 4 year old.

But I'll withhold judgement for awhile. Not because I think Peterson is incapable of doing it (I have no idea) but I know I picked up far worse scrapes, cuts and bruises every summer just from being a kid - climbing trees, rocks and mountains, wrestling in vacant lots, crawling through bushes and all the other things we did as children back then. It's not inconceivable that he spanked him around the same time as his little boy did typical little boy things. It doesn't look good for him though.

Those photos of those marks were taken after the child returned to Minnesota and after visiting the doctor. The photos were credited to the Houston Police Department but don't know if they were taken by the doctors in Minnesota or if the mother took the child back to Houston to file the report. A four year old should not be subject to that sort of abuse.

Also Peterson hasn't denied that he did it. The statement from his lawyer was that he was using his parental judgment to discipline his son.

Of course it does. That is why I want more facts. The first grand jury didn't see enough to indict, but the second one did. What changed? More evidence? Different prosecutor? Stupid grand jury?

I agree. Not that it will be easy to determine but I would also want to know if it was done calmly, as discipline, or in anger, as punishment. If it was done as discipline, I'd be much more accepting of the action then if it resulted from anger. I would try to change it but I'd find it less worrisome. I'm speaking more about how I'd feel if I were part of his life rather than the court. It probably won't matter to them either way.

Or how advanced we have become.

It is far different to self-inflict cuts/scrapes from playing than to have them inflicted by someone whom you are supposed to trust.

And as AZlen posted - these pics are at least a week old (assuming they are from the police).
