Laying in supplies - 3 gals fresh water, lots of various batteries, canned tuna, battery powered lanterns & portable radios. Moving patio furniture and plants off deck or sheltered spot on deck.
Update - Laid in the groceries this morning (especially things you can eat or drink cold - like Tostitos, tabouli, canned tuna and instant coffee). Trips to Lowes and Sears yesterday and today (to buy camping equipment like the lanterns and portable gas-burners) proved futile. Will have to make do with 30-year old Coleman stuff bought during a more active time.
While I live near the Jersey Shore, we're situated 10 miles inland and on sheltered, higher ground (100' above sea-level) so flooding shouldn't be a problem (sound of fingers crossing). Biggest concerns are a tree falling on house, loss of electricity (our land-line internet phones are electric-powered) or a ruptured gas line.
Hoping to watch SD game ("live" on DirecTV west coast feed) which calls to mind my worst fear - that my dish antenna will blow down and I'll lose satellite reception ( including for the rebroadcasts of the SD game) for the remainder of the weekend and maybe the week). Northeasterners w. DirecTV - we may have other viewing/listening fallback options: NFL Network rebroadcasts -11 pm ET Monday (& a couple of times later in the week) and possibly FSN AZ (if they don't black it out).
Judging by the reaction from government, media and fellow neighbors, this is the most serious local natural event I've run across in 3/4 of a century living in Greater NYC.
