Pollack's career likely over

Associated Press
Posted: 2 hours ago

CINCINNATI (AP) - Bengals linebacker David Pollack will need surgery for the cracked bone in his neck, likely ending his football career.
Pollack cracked the bone while making a tackle against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 17 and was placed in a halo brace that immobilized his neck. Doctors told him that if the fracture healed without surgery, he could resume his career. The former first-round draft pick was examined Thursday by a specialist who recommended surgery on the fracture, which is expected in the next few weeks.
Pollack wasn't available for comment. All that the Bengals would say is that "no forecast of Pollack's eventual return to football will be made at this time."
The news was released after players were done practicing in the afternoon.
During an interview in October, Pollack said that his career would most likely be over if he had to have surgery.
"If it heals by itself, then I'm fine," he said at the time. "It's just like anything else. I'll be fine to play again. It's just a matter of how it heals."
He said during the interview that if the crack in the bone didn't heal on its own, doctors would have to fuse two vertebrae to stabilize it. He has full range of motion in his arms and legs, but would be risking paralysis if he tried to play after such an operation and hurt the neck again.
"One doctor said it: Not very many people walk away from a broken neck twice," Pollack said. "And that's something that kind of hits home, you know.
"When you fuse two vertebrae together, the likelihood for injury is greatly increased."
Pollack was a first-round draft - 17th overall - in 2005 out of Georgia, where he played defensive end. The Bengals picked him intending to move him to linebacker.
A contract dispute cut into his rookie training camp, and he didn't start until the sixth game. A sprained knee forced him to miss two games during the season. Despite the setbacks, he ranked second on the team with 4 1/2 sacks.
The Bengals were expecting a big second season out of Pollack. He snapped his neck while tackling Browns running back Reuben Droughns during the second game of the season. As he lay on the field, he didn't have feeling in his arms.
He was regaining sensation when he was taken off the field, which made him think he merely pinched a nerve. Medical tests found the small fracture, and he was put in the protective halo immediately.

Awesome. Sign a huge-a*s contract, get hurt and then one year later just walk away from football. I wonder how the Bengals feel right now. :)

You can't seriously think the Bengals are worried about the contract when the guys career is over due to a broken neck?

Really sucks, Pollack was one of my favorite college players, for whatever reason Georgia was on tv a lot in California when he was in college, just a real high motor player.

Hope this doesn't impact the rest of his life too much.

In poor taste: The one Bengal not arrested in the offseason.

In better taste: Hopefully he safely invested his rookie bonus and can live more comfortably than we all do. Live well fella.

Uh, yes i can. The NFL is still a business and the Bengals invested a very high pick in him and a LOT of money. You act like the guy is about to die if somebody touches his neck.

What's really disgusting about this is that I was wathcing some of this game when it happened(thanks Sunday Ticket!!!) and saw this play. Not much was said about Pollack or his status when it happened. But those clowns at ESPN and even the NFL had in-depth, lockeroom, nonstop coverage because that jacka#$ T.O. broke his FINGER the same day. Can't believe that's were their priorities are. Just digusting way to go ESPN!

Very sad. He is a great guy and would have been a very good player. I saw an interview with him and his wife. I hope he is able to walk again.

I think that "BigWatson" can expect visits from three ghosts later on tonight.

He's not paralyzed, that's the good news. He has very strong faith and he and his family will work through this. It's a shame he probably won't be able to play football anymore but there are more important things.

WTF? You think the guy WANTED to get hurt and never play football again? It's not like he's getting paid not to be an insurance salesman or a dog-walker. The guy was playing in the NFL, probably his life-long dream. You're acting as if he stole the money and is laughing all the way to the bank.

What the hell is going on with the board lately? Did ASFN post an ad in the local middle school newspaper?

Dude what's your deal fam? Do you have a vendetta against Pollack or the Bengals? We know the NFL's focus is the dollar bill, but damn, give it a break. That's not even necessary.

definitely unfortunate news - i liked the guys approach to the game

also, NFL contracts aren't guaranteed - he will get his 7.6M and should live a nice life off of it - however, if he played out his contract he could of made another 6M (plus any subsequent deals)

I think the bengals are more upset that someone in their football family was severly injured and that they will not get good use out of a first round pick, much more so than having to take a hit against the cap

Well "the guy" couldn't move his arms or legs for 15-20 minutes after it happened on the field, and is now facing a surgery that probably ends his career so yeah it was a pretty serious injury.

Why do you think high picks in the NFL draft get "huge a**" contracts in the first place? Because football is a dangerous game and you can get seriously hurt playing it. I was out sick yesterday watching ESPN2 and they were showing a replay of a Colts/Raiders game from the Bert Jones with the Colts days. They showed a play near the goalline where a Raider LB hit the RB and went down and stayed down, they then put the guy on screen, he broke his neck on that play, and it wasn't diagnosed until 10 months later! He said he went numb on the field, they helped him off, said it was a stinger, he played next season until the pain got too bad and they finally discovered he'd broken his neck.

To each his own I just don't see the point of complaining about a contract when the guy broke his neck, it's not like he's sitting out with a phony injury.

"Pollack has said that if there is even a 5 percent increase in the chance for further injury or paralysis he would retire rather than resume his football career."

Well, undrafted free agents get paid what? They get like a $500 signing bonus and that's it. If you want to play football, then do it. But don't cash in 10 million dollars and then just walk away from football because the chance of you getting seriously hurt is 5% higher than everybody elses. At least give the team a part of your signing bonus back. Its not like his life is over now. He will be perfectly fine after that surgery.

OK I didn't realize you were a spinal surgeon so I retract my comments.

How do you know this? The man can't play a game he loves because of an injury he suffered while playing it. Oh yeah, he'll be perfectly fine.
 That signing bonus is part of the risk that is taken by both players and owners.
