System QB? That's Joe in a nutshell. He had Bill Walsh, who also was a genius coach, with a West Coast Offense no one could defend. No salary cap too. And then there was this Rice guy (who started the YAC stat). Love Joe too but I have to go with the San Mateo Kid. Gulp, did I just say that?

And, often forgotten, one of the best defences of his era.

Fairly certain the West Coast offense, run by Walsh and Montana, was a "system". Is there a rigid definition for "system"?

I just don't get this. Over 17 years that team has played different systems.

Anyone who watched The Randy Moss years and says that was the same system as the 2004 team with Corey Dillon... or same system as the 2 TE Gronk team in 2014... wasn't really watching, IMO.

Agreed.

I think the first 10 years or so was the quasi-run & shoot offense using two tight ends, and then when Brady became what he is now, the system became whatever worked and Brady would handle the changes.

Yes. Without a doubt.

I would say a "system QB" plays well in a particular system. I would say a "non-system QB" plays well regardless of the system he is put into.

Chad Pennington is not going to succeed in Bruce Arians offense, as Carson Palmer is not going to succeed in the offense that Pennington was running.

Does it matter ? Nope. Not at all really. A successful QB is a successful QB, but it is sure fun to debate who is better. LOL

I don't think the Young lead Niners ever beat the Montana lead Chiefs... nah, Joe would have been great in a lot of systems :)

I would have liked to see it.

I thought Steve Young was a better QB than Joe Montana. I know that is blasphemy but it is my opinion on the matter.

Same coach same QB with adjustments. There is no way TB has the career he's had without BB. He wouldn't be as successful under a Schwartz or a Fisher coached team. Brady ended up in the perfect situation with BB. My opinion & I know it's not popular but it's what I believe.

Joe Montana had Dwight Clark, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, and Russ Francis among other players while we'd all be hard pressed to name 5 consistent Brady targets. Gronk, Welker, Moss(for 3 seasons), Amendola, and he never had that blue chip RB behind him like Montana did but Brady never had that monster WR like Rice to work with.

I also don't think TB could have done what Warner did. Warner took 2 different teams to the Superbowl. Not many are capable of doing that. Granted he had a ton of talent in St Lou but there was nobody better with the quick reads.

If BB is such a genius then why did he fail in Cleveland?

I will always say Joe and I will tell you why, and why I also would take Joe over Brady. Now first off Tom Brady is a great QB, amazing QB no matter if it's a 'system' thing or not. Steve Young was no Tom Brady but he was a great QB. Joe, though had something which I have never seen to this day on a consistent basis from even Tom and that was an ability to somehow, some way, know exactly what was going on everywhere on the field at the same time. I would see Joe throw passes like he had a sixth sense. Tom is methodical and carves you up like Warner did to an extent, but Joe was metaphysical for lack of a better description. I mean he would throw passes to areas which where not timing routes on occasion but just some kind of freaking diving intuition. All winners in the clutch, but Joe had that special something you could not explain and could not defend against because if you let your guy get free... Joe would find him

This. Montana was the best I ever have seen bar none. Bart Starr had instincts like that too. Brady is great but if I had to take one guy to win the big game it would be Joe every time.

Because Cleveland? He did go to the playoffs with the Browns which nobody else has done since except for Butch Davis in 2002. I would think he probably figured out what did & didn't work & adjusted. Either that or maybe management didn't let him make the changes he wanted. Who knows?

Tom Brady is LITERALLY the only player from the first Super Bowl to now. He's taken more than two entirely different teams to the Super Bowl and WON.

Brady's a GOD of football. He's #1 on Mount Rushmore. If you believe otherwise you're either dumb or stupid....likely both.

No one slings it like he does. His ability to pick defenses apart is unmatched. No one has done more in their career at the qb position.

Add to it...he's never had top flight WR's to work with.
