I'm not sure if anyone else is watching this San Diego game but it is bring back some awful Whis memories. Their offense is terrible and its the same boring, trap, off-tackle, draw garbage that Whis was calling here. The good news is hes still mixing in a QB sack or two to kill a drive.

That combined with seeing the tired Cardinal cast-offs in this game, its making me even more excited for something new this year. I hope San Diego is ready for a low scoring, boring year. :bigyawn:

Yea their opening 13 play, 75 yard drive that took 7:30 mins by the starters was terrible! ;)

I just don't get the hate for Wiz, he's proved when he had a viable NFL QB he can win & also took the hapless Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl & was 2 mins from hoisting the Lombardi! If the Chargers are losers, IMO its not going to be the fault of Ken Whisenhunt.

Atlanta only scored 10 points tonight at home against the Bungles in their own first preseason game.

They too are in for a very long year. Wonder if they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet.

I just don't get the hate for Wiz, he's proved when he had a future HOF NFL QB he could resemble a NFL Head Coach.

Very slight fix.

I don't hate Whiz, but I am thrilled we changed EVERYTHING. I am most excited about the GM change. The approach to this off-season was nothing like the Cardinals of old.

Exactly, they pushed around the Hags pretty good in that opening drive and were stopped on a 4th and 1 leaving them with a chip shot.

If the Cards open up with a similar drive tonight folks on here will be doing back flips.

This is no Whiz love fest. The point here is to state their offense looked like crap when in actuality their starters executed offense well is simply looking at the game through Whiz colored glasses.

Whiz's coaching wasn't the problem in AZ. It was a combination of his reluctance to get rid of Grimm & not having a real GM that doomed him. Too many on this board have already put BA up on a pedestal. Let's hope that pedestal holds up, or it's a painful landing for an old, fat guy.

That team is in BIG trouble! A marginal running game, lack of WR's, and declining Marmalard at QB, is bad enough already... add in the not-so-vaunted Ken Whisenpunt offense, and it's over before it even starts. I'd lay a double-sawbuck that the Cards wind up with a better record than the Bolts.

Whisenhunt will improve the Chargers. He helped Warner improve his ball security issues and those are the same issues Rivers has suffered from the last two years. Rivers biggest problem has been INT's and fumbles. Whisenhunt will help clean that up. Chargers do have serious issues but they aren't due to Whis.

Whiz did nothing at all to improve the QB's not named Warner.

True enough, but Rivers has more talent than all our QB's not named Warner combined. You can polish a turd and turn it into a coffee table but it's still a big stinky dookie. And yes, he was instrumental in choosing our coffee table, but when he hasn't had to do the choosing he's been able to work with talent.

I suppose the same could be said about Norv Turner, who didn't have much success with Rivers in the past few years.

Norv Turner is awful. They fire Marty Schottenheimer, due to internal personality issues, after a 14-2 season and have never been as good. Best RB in the league in LT and every year in the playoffs he was on the bench pouting, even while they still have a chance to compete. That's not coaching, that's an unhappy player with his coach.

"The Chargers started the 2009 campaign slowly, with a 2–3 record, a trend under current coach Norv Turner (1–3 in 2007 & 2–3 in 2008)."

If anything Norv took a great team and ran it into the dirt. It's amazing they've been competitive at all, but that's just an indication of how good they were under Shotty--it took years to get to this level of suckage.

(This post wasn't really directed at you either Mulli, I just have a coach-crush on Shotty and a lack of respect for Turner as a coach)

I bet Shoddy's playoff record is about the same as Norv's. And it is entirely arguable that Norv has an equal or better record as an OC that Whiz.

Good comparisons.

(not trying to be argumentative or jerky)

Can't argue that. Marty's playoff record was disappointing given the talent he had. They were totally stacked on both sides of the ball. Marty still holds the record for wins though, for any team not to make a SB since 1996. I don't know if that's good or bad, depends on how you look at it--but I want a coach who can win games. The playoffs take pain and experience, usually, to navigate through. Look at a coach like Mike Smith (and Matty Ice). Prolific winners until they hit the playoffs (still haven't made a SB).

I agree with you completely about Norv VS Whisenhunt as OC. I'd take Norv and his pedigree as OC any day of the week. I'm not a Whis apologist, I don't apologize for mistakes that aren't mine. He has numerous faults. But he took us where we've never been. He's an engineer and my belief is he's poor at talent evaluation, but really good at metrics and devising systems etc. He just has to have the talent to run those systems, because he can't pick them himself. He's terrible at judging talent, but really good at using it effectively, in my opinion.

You had me at engineer. :)

Good points. Now let's get some games to discuss. DVR is set!
