ESPN's Rob Parker on RGIII: 'Is he a brother or is he a cornball brother?'

http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameo...er-questions-robert-griffin-iii-race/1767071/

Rob Parker, a former Detroit News columnist, questioned the blackness of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and claimed he wasn't authentic. "Is he a brother, or is he a cornball brother," Parker asked.

"I keep hearing these things. We all know he has a white fiancée. There was all this talk about he's a Republican."

The bombastic Smith had to put an end to it.

"I'm uncomfortable with where we just went," he said. "RGIII, the ethnicity or the color of his fiancée is none of our business, it's irrelevant, he can live his life in whatever way he chooses. The braids that he has in his hair, that's his business, that's his life, he can live his life."

---------------------------------------

Parker comes off as a racist clown. Ridiculous. If anyone is a "cornball brother" it would be him.

This is part of a concerted effort by ESPN to drum up controversy. Look at who is involved Skip, Stephen A. Smith, and the dope from Michigan.

Meh. More of the same.

And it is absolutely not only in America.

yeah ... that line is even dumber than the line from parker .... at least with parker it's part of the look at me 1st take promotional garbage trying to drum up controversy and bring in an audience, even if the audience is only there to yell at the host

I hope he gets fired or is asked to resign. Rush Limbaugh was asked to resign from ESPN in 2003(?)for talking about skin color, why is this any different? (FYI, not a Limbaugh fan, just saying what's good for the goose...)

Saw that. Something happened and he immediately stopped. Read some of his mentions and they were going at him hard.

Good riddance. No need for that racial ******** on ESPN.

It was just a part of the schtick for that deploreable show. One guy/gal takes an outlandish stand and the other guy(s) "debate" with him/her about it.

In this case, it backfired and, I am sure, they will be back to nonsense as usual today. I won't know because I stopped watching long ago. Skip and Stephen A. deserve each other.

As the article said, when Stephen A. is the "voice of reason" on something it is sad indeed.

ESPN suspends Rob Parker “until further notice”

ESPN has suspended columnist and commentator Rob Parker indefinitely after he said on the air Thursday Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is “black, but he’s not really,” because Griffin is engaged to a white woman.
“Rob Parker has been suspended until further notice. We are conducting a full review,” ESPN said in a statement.
That further review should include not just Parker, but also everything about the show on which Parker made his comments on Thursday morning, ESPN First Take. It’s telling that when ESPN aired Best of First Take on Thursday afternoon, it included Parker’s comments. That’s because First Take thrives on provoking controversies with its panelists making outrageous claims, and it wasn’t until Parker’s comments were the subject of widespread criticism later in the day that ESPN felt the need to acknowledge the comments were inappropriate.
Just as the producers who decided to include Parker’s comments on the “Best Of” show apparently saw nothing wrong with them, Parker is clearly taken aback by ESPN suspending him: He initially defended his comments and called his critics “uneducated” and “silly” for questioning him. Parker has had nothing to say publicly since ESPN released a statement on Thursday evening that his comments were inappropriate.
On Friday morning’s edition of First Take, Parker’s comments were never mentioned. Although panelists Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith had a shouting match about Griffin, they touched only on whether he would be able to lead the Redskins to victory on Sunday while playing through a knee injury, and made no comment at all about Griffin’s personal life. Parker is probably wishing right now that he had made no comment at all about Griffin’s personal life, either.

I'm no fan of ESPN but this runs counter to their normal approach. They like controversy but they absolutely abhor anything that brings this kind of attention their way. I suspect Parker won't be the only one in trouble for this incident.

Steve, not as it pertains to this particular show. Its entire premise is provoking controversy in many obnoxious ways. This time, it just backfired on them with one of their guys going overboard.

In other parts of their programming you are absolutely correct. This show is an exception to the rule. I, for one, can't understand anyone watching this garbage day after day.

I understand and agree with what you're saying but ever since the Donovan McNabb comments by Rush, they've been hyper-vigilant in trying to avoid anything that smacks of racism. They were so embarrassed by that whole thing they ended up hiring the mouth that roared away from Fox. I don't know if there is another Stephen A Smith available to soften the outrage from another racist problem. Fortunately for them, this will be viewed primarily as a black-on-black incident but still, they try very hard to avoid this particular type of controversy. The producer(s) that decided to air that clip in their best-of segment later will probably be in a lot of trouble too. JMO.

Yep, they will be but only because of the outrage it has caused. It won't be long until it is forgotten, sort of like Stephen A.'s use of the "n" word just a few weeks back :)

What an idiot. RGIII is the man.

I totally agree. RGIII in not only a great football player but a guy I would want for a neighbor and friend. I never think of him as black or brown but as a very smart man and a great football players. It seems we can never get away from race. What bothers this fool of a reporter about RG?
