OT - Hornets to Fire Scott

Its on ESPN now. Wow, I think its a big mistake for the hornets. Scott is a good coach, blame their management for trying to get under the cap and not having a good cast around Paul. If Gentry weren't doing so well with the Suns, I would love for the Suns to pick up Scott as coach.

The Hornets really over-reacted after their loss to Phoenix. See the quote from Marc Stein at ESPN.

The New Orleans Hornets have responded to their 3-6 start by making the first coaching change of the young NBA season, firing Byron Scott on Thursday, according to NBA coaching sources.

Sources said the Hornets made the decision to dismiss Scott following New Orleans' 124-104 loss in Phoenix on Wednesday night and will formally announce the move later Thursday.

As with most Coaching firings in the NBA this one really isn't Scotts fault and its undeserved. Emeka Okafor is their 3rd best player, how the hell are they supposed to be good? David West is their best inside scorer and he's more of a jump shooter. They have no talent on the wings to help Chris Paul, and no one on that team outside of West can create their own shot w/ out Paul.

Scott didn't build their mediocre roster, Jeff Bower did. But I guess now he'll get to see just how crappy the roster he built actually is, have fun idiot!

There haven't been any cost cutting moves yet despite what the articles say. They signed posey before last season to a high contract. They traded away TC for Okafor who has a longer similarly priced deal. If they keep losing, then you can see them look to cut salary, but right now they are 3 mill over the cap.

I kind of thought they'd hire Avery Johnson, what with his Louisiana ties and all. Someone said they are bringing back Tim Floyd to put on the bench next to Bower. Dumb move #4.

Sucks for Scott, hopefully he can land somewhere else as a HC. I think he's a good coach. Bower should think about getting rid of players like Peja, who went scoreless last night.

Wow.. This really surprises me and you have to wonder what they are thinking. Remember the rumblings last year about how unhappy Chris Paul was with the organization regarding moves to make the team better? I think this is just the start of a downward spiral minus a major trade. That's the only way I see them keeping Paul happy.

Paul signed a 3 year contract extension through 2012 with a player option for another year. However, we all know that if a player of his caliber wants to be traded, he will be traded. This will be interesting to see if this is just a small little bump to improving the team or truly the start of the franchise regressing.

I don't get why everyone is on the Scott bandwagon. I followed the nets while he was there and saw what I could of NO last few seasons. He's lucky in the sense that he got to coach two of the games best PG's but I don't really see any exceptional qualities he brings to the table as a coach. He pissed off Kidd and Paul didn't seem too pleased lately either.

Carlisle, Doc Rivers, now Scott have all been bounced soon after winning COY - I guess they suddenly can't coach anymore? NO won 49 games last year with Paul, West, an oft injured Chandler, and a motley crew of scrubs. The roster really isn't very good outside of Paul, it's a shame B-Scott had to take this firing after a measly 9 games this season, I'm sure he will have another coaching job soon, possibly this season.

Truth. Unless of course someone believes Mike Brown was the best coach in the NBA last season with his world renouned "Give the ball to Lebron" offense.

The Coach almost always goes before the GM. It's how it goes. The Coach is always the scape goat. There are tons of examples of fired coaches going on to other teams and making multiple franchises better then when they gotten there.

GM's try and save their own butts. Then when coach after coach fails, the GM finally goes. Sometimes even then the GM is a scape goat as well because ownership is so bad. Look no further then our own "old" Cards for that one.

Scott can coach, but he's be an awful fit in Phoenix. He's a control freak which would clash with the style Nash has succeeded in (that's where him and Kidd's relationship fell into disarray) and he'd severely damage our chances with both our top FA targets in 2012.

It is interesting to see you place Gentry (8-1) and D'Antoni (1-8) side by side in your evaluation.

Personally, I think he lasts a little while longer in NY, then goes to coach somewhere like Golden State, which will end up being a much better situation for him.

Golden State would be ideal for DA....or here. There's no pressure to win a title or play defense in G.S.

I agree, D'Antoni has to have Nash (or another MVP caliber player) to succeed because all D'Antoni "does well" is roll the ball out to said star player and whine incessantly to the officials. Oh yeah, and he's also good at failing/refusing to develop youth and ignoring defense.

He'd suck at Golden State too with that roster. And even if he did have an elite cast he'd find a way to lose in the postseason by his teams not playing defense or coming apart mentally.

D'Antoni is and has always has been massively overrated.
