Taking the Rooney rule a HUGE step further. He must not think 25% of the head coaches being minority is a good enough showing for the league. He must be looking for 100%

"At this point, forcing NFL owners to conduct token interviews won’t result in more hires. I think the league should partner with Tony Dungy on an annual daylong seminar at the owners meeting that mandates ownership, team presidents and general managers interact with and interview Dungy’s handpicked top-25 minority coaching candidates.

Uh yes that is exactly what they should do. Do Rod Graves and Ozzie Newsome, et al, have to go? Or just honkie crackers?

Got ya. I think they would all have to go. I'm surprised Whitlock isn't up in arms that two NFL GM's who are minorities have "white honky cracker" coaches leading there teams :)

Shane maybe should've posted the rest of that quote:

Networking is how minority coaches can get on the radar for head-coaching and coordinator jobs. It’s rare that you win a coaching job in the interview process. You win the job when there is a mutual attraction, when someone you trust and respect has told you, “You’re really going to like this person. He/she is perfect for you.”

The issue isn't that there aren't enough minority head coaches. The issue is that the names of minority coaching candidates don't get bandied about (Leslie Frazier is more the exceptions than not) as hot candidates. There aren't a ton of minority coordinators right now that I know of.

I think that Whitlock is advocating an iron fist where a velvet glove is due, but I have no problem asking ownership and general managers to attend a minority coaching mixer during spring meetings or whenever.

I'm not quite sure what Shane's issue is here.

It won't be long until they have to interview a female as well. Maybe Jenn Sterger? What ever happened to hiring the best person for the job?

Forcing a minority onto a businessman for any reason is just plain wrong. It's going too far in the opposite direction. The Rooney Rule is wrong because it really screws teams that KNOW who they want already. They still have to interview minority coaches, and those coaches don't want to just be token interviews. There is NO reason to exacerbate this system even further.

1) No one is forcing a minority onto a businessman.

2) How are teams screwed? They still get the person they want.

3) Don't the minority candidates get the benefit of (A) going through the interview process and (B) getting their name out there as a potential head coaching candidate? Why is this a bad thing?

Apparently there are a lot of people who are eager to get angry about something. Whitlock is clearly overstating his point here (as he frequently does), but I'm not sure why people are so mad.

same reason why people voted out affirmitive action in arizona.

If you are black would you rather get calls and jobs because you are qualified or get them because your black and they needed to hire a black guy? noone wants to be just a number, they want to be recognised for who they are.

The majority of people that are pissed off about something wouldn't be unless somebody told them that they should...

I'm not quite sure what Shane's issue is here.

The author isn't suggesting ownership and GMs be asked to attend:
I think the league should partner with Tony Dungy on an annual daylong seminar at the owners meeting that mandates ownership, team presidents and general managers interact with and interview Dungy’s handpicked top-25 minority coaching candidates.

I think people will always take issue when someone advocates implementing rules based on their opinions that force others (who may not share their opinion) to change their methods.

It’s rare that you win a coaching job in the interview process. You win the job when there is a mutual attraction, when someone you trust and respect has told you, “You’re really going to like this person. He/she is perfect for you.”

Certainly don't agree with that opinion. I think your experience, coaching philosophy and track record of success are the main factors - all of which are discussed in great detail during interviews.

Apparently there are a lot of people who are eager to get angry about something. Whitlock is clearly overstating his point here (as he frequently does), but I'm not sure why people are so mad.

I didn't sense anyone getting angry or mad, but maybe I'm not reading everyone's true emotions into their comments. Maybe you all could use more emoticons?

I may be in the minority here (no pun intended), but I think the manipulation of the Rooney Rule is outright insulting.

Look at last year with Jerry Gray and Leslie Frazier.. Or this year with Ray Sherman. To me, that's as insulting to them as immediately giving the job to a Caucasian candidate is.

Sorry, but you're bringing them in, going through the motions to fill a quota? That doesn't resonate with me, and is offensive.

Name to be bandied. Winston Moss DC Packers.

I don't get the whole Tony Dungy mystique.

Jim Caldwell doesn't count. Peyton coaches that team.

I think that the league needs to form a committee to address the fact that the league doesn't have enough Jewish people and Asians on the rosters. Every team should have to at least have one on the roster in order to better represent society

I don't know why so many get so irritated by this process.

Although 70 percent of the NFL's players were black, only 28 percent of the assistant coaches and 6 percent (2) of the head coaches were African-Americans.

Link to full article below.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs06/news/story?id=2750645

It is obvious that blacks were not give the same chance to become a coach in the NFL (asst or HC) as whites.

Since the Rooney rule went into place a record high of 21% (7) HC's were black.

I won't say it was a racist thing but it was obvious that not everyone was given the same chance. This can be explained by the old boys club and networking. The article covers this so I won't rehash it.

Oviously the issue of racism has improved in this country, we have a black president after all. It would be niave to think that there isn't a somewhat large segment of the population that doesn't have racist thoughts and or actions.

I have a dream....

Because it's racism for the league to give preference to blacks over other coaching candidates.

Bingo. My father was the victim of severe reverse racism because of the existence of affirmative action. He was a great employee that fought against the idiocy of a poorly run facility, and they punished him for it with affirmative action. That's why I hate anything to do with any kind of affirmative action.

I won't get into personal detail, but I had a similar experience that affected my life tremendously. I was overjoyed when Arizona overturned the legality of affirmative action.

They don't give preference, they just mandate that every team interviews at least one minority. Racism? 70% of your employees are black but only 25% are in management. And once again, no team is forced to hire a black, just give one an opportunity to sell himself. There is no quota to meet. I work in a job where they try to meet quotas and I think that it sucks but this isn't what is going on.
