The Rooney Rule isn't Affirmative Action.

The only way any white guy is going to lose a job to a minority guy is if the minority guy is more qualified, but this forces the league to examine the black (or hispanic, in the case of Rivera) for consideration. I don't see the problem.

The problem is that teams are being FORCED into interviewing minority candidates. Is it something that should be encouraged? Yes but not forced. I'm sure some of the "candidates" would prefer that they weren't there for a token interview when the decision for another coach has already been made.

The sadder truth is that this issue is greatly ignored at the NCAA level where it is more of a problem.

I think that the league needs to form a committee to address the fact that the league doesn't have enough Jewish people and Asians on the rosters. Every team should have to at least have one on the roster in order to better represent society
There should be a mandatory amount of Caucasian players on a team as well. Or at least invited to camp and given a chance. How many more Peyton Hillis's do there have to be before a change is made?

There are FAR more African American players on teams (a bit over 70%) than any other race. Almost to the point of being blatantly racist at this point.

I also think it should be mandatory to have at least one openly homosexual player and a woman on each roster as well and they should be able to wear the breast awareness pink all year long.

Thanks to the Rooney rule the NFL can now focus on whats truly important: Racial Diversity...and not just focus on putting who the most qualified person for the job is in that position and thus promoting racism.

With mine and T. Rosenbach's ideas added to the agenda I believe some real headway can be made against racism, sexism, and many other ism's.:D;)

Shane maybe should've posted the rest of that quote:

The issue isn't that there aren't enough minority head coaches. The issue is that the names of minority coaching candidates don't get bandied about (Leslie Frazier is more the exceptions than not) as hot candidates. There aren't a ton of minority coordinators right now that I know of.

I think that Whitlock is advocating an iron fist where a velvet glove is due, but I have no problem asking ownership and general managers to attend a minority coaching mixer during spring meetings or whenever.

I'm not quite sure what Shane's issue is here.

I posted the link for a reason. I don't care what Whitlocks reasoning behind that proposal is. That proposal that I highlighted is even more asinine than the Rooney rule itself IMO. My issue was made quite clear with his suggestion that I posted and BOLDED.

Giving Tony Dungy Carte Blanche to just pick 25 minorities of his choosing and then force feed those 25 candidates down the owners/GM's throat during a day long seminar supposedly showing why they are perfectly qualified to be a head coach.

So instead of the single token interviews that he alludes to now you are having one very large token interview with a group to group setting.

BTW who made Dungy the minority "god?"

In Whitlocks proposal do so many of the those minorities have to be of different ethnic back grounds? etc.. etc..

I understand this is all just a suggestion from him and nowhere even close to being something that is instituted.(I think) Just pointing out how I don't agree with it.

You do? More power to ya!

Yes Whitlock has taken it to an idiotic level.

The Rooney rule was needed at one point and it may be to soon do away with it.

I would think that the NFL locker room would be one of those places where racism is at a minimum. I wonder if it is the same in the Military. Counting on your team mates and squad members to ensure success and staying alive would seem to remove the color barrier.

How realistic and accurate was the movie Rember the Titans?

I don't know how people can watch a movie like that or Roots or A time to kill or....and not realize that racism was and is an issue that needs to be fixed.

Remember the Titans was extremely inaccurate. The school had already been integrated for a few years before their championship run, the racial tension on the team was grossly fabricated for the movie, and the Gettysburg scene was made up out of thin air.

So there you go.

Having a day long seminar for prospective black coaches won't fix anything. If they want to expand the Rooney rule, they should simply take it away from Head Coaching requirements and implement it for the coordinators. Most head coaches come from a coordinator position, or another head coaching position. Both areas where I would assume that the ratio is about 4:1.

I'm curious though, what's the ratio on coordinators?

Yeah, maybe Whitlock had to go back to it, when he realized his Todd Haley should be fired thing was a bit silly.

He just REALLY wants a minority coach in KC.

70% of your employees are black but only 25% are in management.

Well maybe that is a problem that needs to be looked into!!!! Maybe they should also mandate that a white athlete be given a tryout for each position before they can hire a black athlete for said position? Or would that be racism?

I understand the spirit of the Rooney Rule; however, it is easy for owners to give it lip service, ala Shanahan's and Garrett's hirings. Proponents will say it is how unlikely candidates like Tomlin got his job. I don't have huge issues with the rule.

I definitely disagree with the Tony Dungy hand-picked candidate-o-rama. And Whitlock really needs to widen his definition of minority. No mention of Rivera in this article?

Really? Do you really think that capable white athletes have any problem getting tryouts with teams, whether it be through the draft or UDFA? I do think that black coaches have had a harder time getting interviews since they aren't a part of the "old boys" network.

This could be why: That 70% of the players are black means nothing. Most coaches aren't former players. Of the 16 coaches on the Cards staff last season only 4 had pro playing experience and one, John Lott, only played one season in the NFL. CKW,Grimm and Chris Miller were the others.

The Colts have 14 of their 18 coaches who did not play pro football. Including their HC
Caldwell was a four-year starter as a defensive back at Iowa and worked as a graduate assistant for the Hawkeyes in 1977.

Most guys get to be coaches by becoming Graduate Assistants or getting jobs as assistants at colleges after they graduate. They spend several years bouncing around from one school to another until they finally get to know somebody who is either in the NFL or at a major University who offers them a job. I don't know that a lot of modern black kids have been inclined to follow that career track. It would be an interesting study.

It's like the show that was on ESPN where they were discussing the lack of black sports reporters. Instead of talking to sports people they should be talking to the Deans of Journalism Schools to look into recruitment efforts of minority students. Personally I think sports writing is just not a job that is attractive to minority kids. The TV and Radio stations don't seem to have any problems getting minorities to work for them as talk show hosts. (who do btw tend to be former players)

Just for information here is the bio on the only under 50 black assistant on the Cards coaching roster:

Tommie Robinson

Running backs; born April 4, 1963 in Columbus, Ga. Strong safety Troy State 1982-85. No pro playing experience. College coach: Arkansas 1991, Utah State 1992-93, TCU 1994-97, UNLV 1998, Oklahoma State 2001, Georgia Tech 2002-05, Memphis 2006, Miami 2007-09. Pro Coach: Dallas Cowboys 1998-2000. Joined Cardinals in 2010.

In addition coaching doesn't require great physical skills or size. Just a desire to be a coach and work hard at it so anyone can do it. Since blacks make up only about 16% of the population it's easy to see why there are so many more white coaches with a chance to connect through the good ol' boy network.

It's been addressed. The rodney rule makes teams look at minority candidates. That helps. If the "token" candidates don't want to go in for an interview, they don't have to. But the reality is, it gets their name in the conversation for HCing poitions.

Agreed, but the NCAA is not under the NFL's purview, so there's notthing they can do about it.

If Jews, Hispanics and Middle Easterners made up the majority of NFL players and only a filled a few of the HC positions, then I'm sure your point would have merit.
