Jason Whitlock is, for my money, one of the best sports columnists in America. ESPN's Page 2 hasn't been the same since he left. He's almost as entertaining as Bill Simmons, but he has much better football knowledge and a lot of sources. Here's what he has to say in a November 16 article about Matt Jones:

6. One of the best-kept secrets in the league is that Jaguars receiver Matt Jones is Randy Moss without the suntan, gaudy stats and media spotlight.

"Lazy bum" probably doesn't do justice to what Jones' teammates think of him. Jones, the 6-foot-6, 235-pound receiver with 4.3 speed, has zero passion for playing football. He's simply collecting a check, moping on the field and living the good life off it.

Jones is a major reason the Jags are underachieving and why the team's passing game is inconsistent. Jones is supposed to be a target who can stretch the defense down the seam and along the sideline. Well, Jones doesn't catch balls down the middle of the field. Much too risky.

There's a lot of focus on Byron Leftwich and his lack of development this season. Leftwich doesn't have a go-to receiver. Jimmy Smith retired and Jones hasn't filled the void.

Sports.AOL.com has put together a very competitive alternative to ESPN.com, at the very least in terms of their columnists.

Jones caused 2 INT's 2 weeks ago by simply letting balls go through his hands, and that was to Garrard not Leftwich.

And Moss on the decisive INT yesterday in the Raider loss cut behind the Saftey instead of in front (as the play called for). Brooks fired the ball right to the safety, that Moss was supposed to be in front of, who picked it for the game saving play. Brooks was trying to be nice not throwing Moss under the bus but he and Art Shell both said the play calls for the WR to get in front of the safety but Moss chose to go behind him. No catches for Moss on the day.

Yeah this is not verbatim but one of the shows yesterday had a very long quote by Moss that basically said 'I don't like this team, so I'm not concentrating and thats why I'm dropping balls.'

Who would trade for that? I can't believe we watch these games sometimes when you think of the people who are making millions to be ******** and I have to sacrifice to pay the sunday ticket bill.

Matt Jones, the quarterback from Arkansas?

When Jacksonville drafted him I couldn't figure out what they were thinking, and to claim he was brought in to be a star at a position he'd never played, is idiotic at best.

Comparing Jones to Randy Moss, one of the greatest receivers in the history of the NFL, is just a way of injecting race into a discussion to deflect blame away from Moss.

I like Whitlock, but he's off ESPN's sports reporters because he was just too far out of line most of the time.

Garrard has been better than Leftwich for two years now.

Conrad.....please chime in...since you live in KC you probably have some opinion on Whitlock...Jason Whitlock writes for the Kansas City Star.... I used to subscribe to the Kansas City star...and I will say that he somehow managed to turn alot of his sports columns into discussions on racial issues...but that was a few years ago..have not followed his columns for a few years...

He said it on his radio show, I'm not happy so I can't concentrate.

Remember pre draft scouts were concerned about Jones for this very reason, doesn't seem to love the game seems like a great athlete with very little drive.

ALong those (racial) lines, Whitlock wrote multiple articles about how Dennis Green was being blackballed by the NFL and if he was white, he'd have a job. That was after SF and then Jax passed on him. Of course he never mentioned that Green was still being paid by the Vikings and wasn't all that eager to work so he was being very demanding in what he wanted and those teams weren't willing to give him that.

Jason is cool, he does do the racial thing quite a bit, he injects it where it dosen't belong IMO a lot of times but he's an awesome football columnist and a lot of times he's the only one in town seriously bagging on the Chiefs when they deserve it.

He dosen't always bring up race and he's skewered guys without regard to it plenty of times but yes he gets on a soapbox now and again.

Still my favorite columnist here by far.

I've read a couple columns by him getting on Moss hard for his attitude, he used to really dog Andre Rison when he was here for his attitutde too, he's not blindly one sided on race.

I've said hi to him at Gates BBQ before, btw that there is some seriously good BBQ... oh man.

He looks like he's been to the BBQ place quite a few times. Maybe that's why he's a DG fan :) .

I never did like Matt Jones coming into the draft. I thought he was the most overrated player coming into the NFL. It's amazing that one or two good forty times can get you millions of dollars. You would think scouts would know better but every year there are guys drafted much too early just because of their 40 time. I think he was in the same draft class as Chris Gamble. Gamble , who can cover anybody, ran a slow 40 time and almost fell out of the first round. In college, he shut down every big name receiver he played against including high 1st rounders like Braylon Edwards, Andre JOhnson, Lee Evans, and others. But he runs a 4.56 and al of a sudden he doesn't have enough speed to play effectively in the NFL  .
