In a van...down by the river.
I know it's summer and we've got a little while longer until the season, but this thread sucks.
It sure does, and sometimes this forum is simply a case of "the good 'ole boys" sticking together using analytical BS in order to discredit a non-member.
Reminds me of high school social politics.

I have respect for what the Star-Spangled Banner represents.

But, "Defence of Fort McHenry" was composed in 1814, 47 years before the civil war, 154 years before the official end of segregation. As a black man Josh Howard has some reason not to celebrate the national anthem.

Edit:
That being said, he could have said this with more respect.

What I was originally pointing out was he said "I'm black I don't support that ****"

If his reason is that there weren't blacks fighting the revolutionary war for the independence of the United States then I would point out that as a black man, he is playing a sport invented by a white in a league that was originally all white.

In fact NBA originally could have meant No Blacks Allowed. Because they weren't.

How can he support that .... hypocrisy

Well obviously this is a pretty strained analogy,I agree it doesn't fit exactly but you got my meaning, Thanks for using it anyway. since parents have certain legal responsibilities to their children. Yes, until the child is approximately 18, the parents just have to suck it up and take it. They could, of course, attempt to mold their child's behavior through various kinds of reinforcement.

Once the child is an adult, the parents can do whatever they want. If I had an ungrateful, hostile, incorrigible child -- which mercifully I do not -- I don't know how I would handle it once that child was grown up. But I do know that I wouldn't feel bound by patriotism to act one way or the other.
Fair enough but I wouldn't have such an ungrateful person around me much.

I appreciate your previous comment about trying to help me find perspective too.

Someone posted a thread saying that Josh Howard does not stand for the national anthem. He also wrote "OT" next to it, so that people would understand that the post was not technically Suns-related. Since it concerns a current NBA player, it IS relevant for NBA fans to discuss. Some people exercised their freedom of speech to say that they disagree with his viewpoint. Not surprisingly, some others quickly jumped at the chance to defend Josh Howard's freedom of speech. Did anyone state that Josh should not be allowed to say what he said, or that he should be forced to stand for our national anthem? I saw people using their freedom of speech to express an opinion about Josh Howard's behavior. What's the problem? I hold in contempt any American that does not honor the flag, the national anthem, and what they stand for. America is the greatest country in the world. That's my opinion, which I am free to state. Anyone who disagrees is free to do so.

What on Earth are you talking about? Being free means being free to do something thats dumb, something that others don't agree with. If Howard doesn't want to participate in the anthem, he doesn't have to, thats what makes this country great.

What does being in an (unconstitutional) war have to do with anything? Do you really think there's troops in Iraq who are in a tense situation, being fired at, and are thinking "geez, I'd feel a lot safer right now if only Josh Howard would sing the Star Spangled Banner"?

Furthermore, there's no one in Iraq "dying for our freedom" and if you really think that you don't know much about world affairs. Their dying for American hegemony, for a perceived goal of a more pro American middle east, et cetera, but I hardly see how Iraq ever threatened Americas freedom.
You da man!

It really is no big deal in my mind, as if it mattered. Flags and songs have little to do with freedom.

Mavs Received Several Low-Ball Trade Offers For Howard

The Mavericks received several off-season trade offers for Josh Howard, but almost all of them were not deemed worthy of consideration. Team officials have said repeatedly they're not interested in trading Howard.

"Josh really is a good guy with a great heart," said Mark Cuban. "He just doesn't do a good job of showing that side of himself publicly. We will work on that."

Dude is a straight moron, guess he was too high to not say something stupid again. If I were the Mavericks I would instruct him to just not talk to the press since you have nothing intelligent to say to them anyway. He is a great talent but apparently just dumb as a rock, I mean seriously why would you even come out and say some of the things he has? Just dumb!

well until josh went and talked on the radio about smoking he was doing fine with the press. he never was an outspoken guy or said anything questionable that I knew of. most of his play did the talking. but once he opened his mouth in a negative light things went south for him in a flash. I don't know what happened with his relationship with avery johnson. It went south...and there were rumors not necessarily truth....that josh was very upset about the devin harris trade as he and harris were great friends off the court. again this wouldn't be the first time a mavs player has expressed frustration...dirk was quick to do so after nash was allowed to walk for a very reasonable deal that could have been matched by dallas. I can't blame howard for his frustrations about the trade. but I don't like his attitude since then. He violated a team policy by having a late night party after a game....this was one reason avery johnson lost complete control of the team in the playoffs and even walked out on a practice when he found out. howards marijuana comments are his choice, but if you are going to talk the talk you gotta walk the walk and his playoff performance was terrible. he didn't handle the media pressure that was put on him. so in retrospect it's clear that he should of kept his comments to himself. Then you have his legal issues in the summer with street racing. now disrespecting the national anthem? Josh is a good player....not a great player. he needs to wake up or he will be out of this league in a flash. If I were the mavericks releasing him wouldn't be out of the question if his actions continue.
