Wikipedia is so unreliable. I personally always thought it was because of Kenny Stabler and/or Jake being elusive.

Here's a piece from an article in an Idaho newspaper:

“Jake the Snake” Plummer got his nickname in junior high after he read the autobiography of another quarterback known as “Snake,” Raiders great Ken Stabler. The moniker fit the skinny Plummer, who was known for his ability to elude defenders and make plays — leading Capital to a state title his junior year and a runner-up finish his senior year.

I'm guessing it's a mix. I'd wager if his name was Thomas it wouldn't have stuck.

We went from SDS to SFS in part because of Aeneas.

In 2000, he played his final season for us, but it was that year he had possibly his greatest impact on the future of the franchise.

With a vote on a stadium proposal only two days away, Aeneas almost single-handedly defeated the Washington Redskins at SDS. He had a fumble recovery that he returned for a record-tying 104 yards and then an INT shortly after that (which resulted in 3 more points). Gave us a 10 point lead which we used to hang on for a 1-point victory.

Terrible season - only 3 wins. But Aeneas apparently gave the voters some hope with that victory and his exciting plays. Prop 302 passed two days later and the rest is history.
I remember that game well. Used to watch games at Damons Grill (I think it was called) and usually had to watch on tiny table TVs.

Yeah I was there too. On the east side in the middle of a huge crowd of 9er fans.

Ah, the rare national TV game where we could get embarrassed in front of the whole country! :) That was a SDS staple.

The only good nationally televised NFL game at SDS, other than the Super Bowl (which I recall wasn't that good of a game), was the Rod Tidwell game.

Don't forget the Monday night fire move, where every creature in Tempe got in!

This was an amazing moment. I remember watching it from my dorm room in McClintock hall.

That 1999 team sucked so much. LOL.

I was sitting there in Section 29 watching Phillips score that clinching TD. Ugh...Thanks for the memories. haha

Jeez that was ugly. You guy's have lived through some PAIN.

Commentator made me laugh when Plumber scrambles for a 1st down and he says "That's why they call him "The Snake"". Nothing to do with him being called Jake and there being a famous wrestler at the time called Jake the Snake, it was because of his mobility...sure.
While that’s true, it was based on his mobility. Jake was celebrated for it despite pedestrian athleticism.

uh... the Snake was his nickname because of his mobility, elusiveness and way he could slither out of trouble, which he started showing off at ASU. Most notably in the Rose Bowl for a TD run that should have won them the national title.

Jake The Snake Roberts time in the Sun had passed a decade earlier and he was already smoking crack by then.

Did he have a high motor or was he deceptively quick?
I don’t think either. I think he had a natural ability to find creases and wasn’t afraid to tuck and run. He never really had giant scrambles - like 20 yards+ with any regularity. But he made things happen with his feet. That Rose Bowl loss still stings. Leaving the Rose Bowl was almost surreal in its disappointment and the fog.

I was just giving the typical white guy tropes. :)

It was better times ten years earlier at the Rose Bowl - when we beat Michigan and the whiny Jim Harbaugh (we were too loud for his liking). Go Devils !!

Probably got the idea from here:

His nickname, "Jake The Snake", was given to him as a tribute to professional wrestler, Jake "the Snake" Roberts. Coincidentally, Roberts adopted his nickname as a tribute to his favorite NFL player, former Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, who was nicknamed "Snake."

Surrounded by Buckeye fans who filled the steps making it near impossible to get out of the stadium.
