Advertising is part and parcel of it, too, as its intimately interwoven with most of our entertainment. It pays to advertise - at least a good bit of the time it does. Without the television revenue the salaries of the players wiould be much smaller. In fact, without the media involvement, which is all fueled by advertising, very few people would be aware of the sport and probably wouldn't pay much to watch the games.

Just think how much more policemen would make if all the 'cop' shows had to use real policemen.

I am not getting upset at the players or even the endorsers. I am really getting upset at the government not paying the people that matter more. Police, Teachers, Firefighters, and so on. Instead they spend their money on Politicians that do line their pockets for the rest of their lives. This really had nothing to do with UA or Kevin, just sparked a feeling about government spending in me. That's all. ;)

This post is exactly how I feel also. I'm not mad that Durant is getting paid a lot, I'm disappointed that teachers, police, fire fighters etc aren't paid enough.

I completely agree that there are a lot of people that should be getting paid more than they do, but that doesn't at all mean that someone like KD is overpaid for what he does. One doesn't have anything to do with the other IMO.

Because he's going to make that company more than 32M/yr.

Bull****.

Where's your proof? Just because he wears a tshirt in an add photo doesn't mean he earned them 1 extra penny.

They are paying him that much to make sure he doesn't sign with Nike or Adidas

Companies are famous for giving money away. I'm pretty sure they have a good idea what he's worth to them, either as a spokesman for their company or to keep him from playing that role for another.

Wow! He is getting the deal done with no risk of injuring himself for Team USA. I would do the same thing if was him as well. Happy for him. Seems to be a great person and always interacting with fans and kids. Congrats KD!

I haven't heard this argument in a bit, but this deal should end the notion that a superstar needs to seek one of the big markets to get the mega-endorsement deals.

Not at all. Circumstances aren't always the same. Right now, there are very few marketable superstars. Do you really think Chris Paul would be getting the commercial play he's been getting as a Clipper if he'd stayed with his first team or if there were a decent number of marketable stars? We'll never know if Durant could have received a similar deal to this one a few years ago if he'd been in a better location.

And for all we know this deal includes an agreement that he will move to a big market (Washington) for his next contract. The timing of the Washington rumors along with Durant's reported behavior recently suggests there is something else going on. It would be a leap to conclude that his agent and sponsor are steering him towards a larger media market but it's not a leap to recognize the possibility.

I actually do Steve. IMO, the league has changed a lot the last 5 years, and I believe a player like CP3 would see the same type of commercial success he's received in LA lately, but only if he was able to achieve the same level of success on the floor that he's seen as a Clipper.

As Eric posted, the key word is entertainment.

Whether sports (college or pro), concerts, shows, etc., people in the U.S. (that is my vantage point) pay up the ol' wazoo to be entertained. To take our mind off dysfunctional politics, military conflicts and anything else that reminds us of the old saying, "Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die."

Sports is a diversion. It does bring about stress, but not the kind that will affect our lives or those of our families.

I think I posted once before the line by Babe Ruth when he got baseball's first $100,000 contract, which was more than the President was paid. The Babe said, "Yeah, but I had a better year." Some things never change. :D

Sometime that stress effects family life, when dealing with the Cards :)

That is why I am a Suns and D-backs fan. That is enough stress. And why I follow the Mercury.

Speaking of sports to offset political stress, this was in the news today.

Major Beth Smith, of the U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), has said "Over the past week, NORAD has visually identified Russian aircraft operating in and around the U.S. air defense identification zones." There have been about 16 Russian forays in the Alaskan and north Canadian area in the last 10 days.

It is not entirely uncommon to see Russian planes in this airspace, however, the increased number of such planes seems to be triggering some concern amongst the aviation military community, particularly given the increased tension in Ukraine. Smith referred to this number of forays as "a spike in activity."

Smith noted that these were training missions, though a spy plane and anti-submarine plane were spotted among the bombers. However, another defense official told the Washington Free Beacon they believe this is more than just a training flight. The official stated "[Russian strategic nuclear forces appear to be] trying to test our air defense reactions, or our command and control systems. These are not just training missions."

The Russian military has admitted they have flown in that area.

Meanwhile, we are back to sending air strike missions to Iraq, escalating conflict and wearing our military thin.

There is more testosterone in our government and military than in jocks. And that is not :).

I agree. The market is not as much of a factor anymore.

It's really too bad. Under Armour is hot garbage and their products look like awful.
