Still... from the Sam Amick article at USA Today.

The Durant injury hurts the Thunder in a whole new way, though, as he was not only their most important player but their last iron man around. Since becoming their centerpiece during the Seattle days in 2007, Durant played in 97% of his regular season games (missing just 16 in all) while averaging a whopping 42.3 minutes in the 73 playoff games the Thunder have played in since 2010.

There's a hold-your-breath component to this Durant injury, too, as Jones fractures (named after orthopedic surgeon Robert Jones) have a habit of healing in the most unpredictable and problematic of ways.

While surgery is expected in Durant's case, the recent stories of Brooklyn Nets big man Brook Lopez, Los Angeles Clippers forward Glen Davis, former Dallas Mavericks point guard Rodrigue Beaubois and others have shown us that a second surgery to heal the fifth metatarsal is sometimes required and recovery times with this injury may be greatly extended.

I think they should trade him now! They can take anything off of our roster.

KD in a Suns uniform. One can only dream. ;)

I just thought it is an interesting piece of news.

It's hard to remember any earlier NBA season that started with such a murky picture of who the title contenders were. You have San Antonio and Cleveland by default, but I don't think either of them will win, yet the picture gets very murky after that. If Durant has complications from this, that could set the Thunder back for a while.

San Antonio benefitted last year from an unsustainable level of focus and determination, inspired by their collapse in the 2013 Finals. There's no way they'll be able to duplicate that. Cleveland just isn't experienced enough; of their key players, how many besides James have more than a few playoff games under their belts?

I agree but I also think they benefitted from it being an off year for several teams because of injuries and other issues. I think San Antonio was an improved team but the Miami team they beat was a shell of the team that won it the two years before.

Right now, I think the most talented team in the NBA is the Clippers. From what little I know, I respect a lot of things about Doc Rivers but I don't think he's one of the better coaches in the league. Still, I think they are talented enough to win it all even with a middle of the pack Head Coach.

I think the Thunder will be looking to make a move, not for any big pieces but someone like Gerald Green might be able to thrive there in Durant's absence, as much as he thrived here last season. He's more of a sure thing than the young players they have. They also lost Sefolosha in the offseason so they may be interested in someone like Green to fill a hole temporarily. I don't see much that the Thunder have though that we'd want in return other than Adams, which I don't see OKC swapping for Green. Maybe Green and the Minny pick for Adams?

I doubt the Thunder do anything, maybe sign someone off the scrap heap. Losing a guy for a month is not worth altering any long term roster planning for.

The Thunder didn't sign anyone this offseason though. They picked up Anthony Morrow and Telfair on the cheap to fill out their roster. They are probably the only playoff team in the west who didn't get better with any trades, picks, or signings this offseason. They arguably took a step back losing Sefolosha who was their best perimeter defender and able to hit the 3, sort of their own Bruce Bowen/PJ Tucker sort of player. Of course I don't see them giving up Westbrook or Ibaka but almost everyone else on the roster should be available to boost them up while KD is out. As said above, this sort of injury can be more problematic than the initial assumptions. You don't let a player like KD rush back from this sort of injury either and risk his long term health. Not having him until the middle of December will hurt them. I know that's just a month and a half or so without him but he not only was their best player but was the MVP last year and is one of the 2 best players in the league.

I know Westbrook is arguably a top 10 player in the league, probably more top 15, but I don't think he can carry the team, which he'll have to. Teams with score first point guards as their best player don't typically translate to good records or contenders. It doesn't help they don't have that good of a coach either. It will be interesting to watch because without Durant they will be a 500 team, at best. I only see Westbrook picking up more bad habits while he attempts to carry the whole load though. Because of their coach and depth I think it will be harder for them to adjust when KD is back versus years past when Westbrook was the one coming back off an injury. I don't think you can pencil OKC into one of the top 4 seeds in the West this year like you could have before this injury. Surely they'll be a team no one wants to play in the first round and should have make the playoffs so long as Durant is back healthy no later than late December but his health and where the team sits when he comes back will be a big question mark.

The Thunder have handled things very conservatively the last few years, the only way I see them making a trade is if its one they think makes sense long term, not as a 4-6 week fix while Durant is out. Westbrook missed nearly half of last season, they didn't panic to try and fix the hole, they instead leaned on a totally unproven Reggie Jackson and Derek Fisher's corpse. I think they will probably find a SF version of Derek Fisher's corpse or go after a victim of roster cuts before the year starts, but I think the idea of them shipping a 21 year old center they're high on is out of the question.

I hear there is a football stadium in LA that is empty. Are they willing to play outside?
Yeah, they don't have enough NBA teams already.

I can't understand, though, how L.A. could go this long without an NFL team, while the Bay Area has two.

Time for Westbrook to shut up the haters and show em what he's really made of.

Oh my Goodness. What a joke.

The Cavs are winning the title this year. The only question is whether they have plus or minus 15 losses on the year. If no injuries, the answer is LESS.
