I watch it for sports highlights and information. Is your motive in watching it really Hannah Storm?
If ESPN were just about providing sports highlights then you'd have ESPN news and that's it. Storm is one aspect of ESPN, yes.

Kornheiser may be right and he may be funny in what he said, but he thumbed his nose at his employer so he was also stupid. That's nothing to do about "PC," that's everything to do about business.

If you guys can't see that, then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I didn't mention anything about "PC", I wasn't part of that conversation. My only point was being critical of Hannah Storm isn't quite as powerful as ripping Mountain Diew if you work for Pepsi. Storm is no doubt an aspect of the show, I just think very few people (if any) watch SportsCenter for her (and therefore can't be considered "the prduct"). It's not like working for the David Letterman show and ripping David Letterman.

I agree with your comment that you shouldn't rip a fellow employee, and agree with what you said, just thought the analogy was a bit strong is all.

I response to the "PC" thing. I am not getting into it as a whole, but in this instance it wasn't PC that got him in trouble. If he had said this about a random news anchor there would be no suspension.

Why can the late night hosts rip their own networks (their employers) repeatedly without censor/suspension? That's been going on for years.

Somebody had to say it. Truth hurts. It is PC, all the way! Maybe you don't mind losing your right to speak your mind, but I do. Again, PC will be the death of our country.

PC spreads way over company lines, again and again,

wow overkill. If I said that one of the girls I work with should stop dressing like shes 60 years old or something, you can bet my manager would have a talking to me. It's not PC, he's a work environment thing. you think storm likes getting blasted on a show she isn't a part of? It's one thing to be like "Wilbon, you look like a fat Tiger Woods", its another thing to dump on Storm when she's not around.

but yea, she looked like a wanna be school girl, I agree

Colin Cowherd has ripped ESPN "the product" many times on his national radio show. He has been critical of them and there coverage and ripped them for it. He has yet to be suspended as far as I know.

While he's totally oblivious to his own, truly terrible, combover.

These shows all have a wardrobe assistant/advisor. Someone who picks out the clothing the on-air talent wears. Kornheiser is fully aware of this. Someone at the network has decided how Ms. Storm will look and the image she'll project. None of the people just pick out something at home and walk onto the set to do the show.

Except maybe Lin Sue Cooney. Last night I think she was going to a pool party as soon as she got off work. (Yes, the fashion police are always hard at work.)

Media personalities being critical of their networks is often fine because the network thinks it's good journalism. Beyond that I imagine their employee code of conduct doesn't look that different than yours or mine. Public comments on a fellow employee's appearance is usually something that will be reprimanded.

definitely over the top to suspend him and it is based purely on gender

as stated other ESPN personalities get away with being critical of the product and it's not uncommon for a guy to bust on the way another guy dresses (as happens on the NFL programing when you have some ex-player dressed in his best pimp suit and everyone gets a chuckle at them)

I'm not a kornheiser fan, but he is merely doing what they pay him to do .... be kind of the crusty, cynical, old guy

the fact that ESPN has issues with guys like steve phillips, harold reynolds and is getting the image of being a woman hating old boys club where testosterone runs the workplace has made them a bit over sensitive

I don't think that is always the case. Kornheiser is a horrific dresser. Nobody who makes a fashion-related living would OK with all the plaid and tweed he likes to wear (or the priest lookalike button up straight collars that Wilbon dons). FWIW, I was at a taping of PTI not long ago (for work) and I saw Tony and Wilbon come in off the street, go to makeup and head straight for the set with no changing or mention of what they were wearing.

I don't like Cowherd but when he does rip on ESPN, he does it in a more tactful manner. He has somewhat of a filter; whereas with Kornheiser, it just becomes verbal diarrhea.

In no newsroom or broadcast outlet am I aware of a wardrobe assistant or advisor. Anchors are advised to dress professional.

I'm certain Hannah Storm dresses herself.

Guess we watch SportsCenter for different reasons. I watch it for sports highlights and information. Is your motive in watching it really Hannah Storm?

It's irrelevant why you watch Sportscenter. In the broadcast industry, the talent is the product. That's why you see faces and names selling the show. ESPN is somewhat unique in that the brand itself is strong, but it was built on personalities. You can't just be a solid anchor on ESPN. You have to bring something else to the table, namely personality.

I say this as someone who works in broadcast. My print background is constantly challenged.

In a situation like Cowherd's (or Letterman's and Leno's), you're allowed to criticize your employer. What you can't do (without repercussion) is criticize other employees. That's a no-no.

That said, Kornheiser probably would've been left alone if he had said this on the radio instead on TV.

O.K. I may be wrong. Or tremendously out of date as I got out of that business a long time ago. Or too used to L.A. Will not be the first time I'm wrong about something. Will not be the last. :)

Of course admitting you're wrong about something on this board is pretty much unheard of so I am giving myself a cookie.

Actually, his comments were on the radio. He made them on his local Washington radio show, not on PTI.

He has not been suspended from his radio show.
