Right, but then there is this report, from above:
In the hours before his boat crashed violently into a jetty off South Beach on Sunday morning, killing him and two friends, Miami Marlins ace José Fernández purportedly argued with his girlfriend and was seen at a Miami River bar.
We don't have all of the details yet, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it was related to drinking and boating.
Every watering hole on the Intercoastal has docking facilities and the Marine patrol enforces hardly anything. They all offer booze service dockside for your boating pleasure.
BTW, his boat was a SeaVee 32. Sportfisher usually rigged with twin Mercury Max's. Most are capable of 50 - 65 knots. The jetties at all of the inlets are manmade. Huge rocks are stacked on both sides of the inlet to form a funnel of sorts. All of the inlets are precarious and not well lit. They were coming into Governor's Cut, which is actually safer than most. There will be a dimly lit few markers about a few hundred yards out, but there is no lighting on the rocks. That boat just slid right up the underwater rocks and launched onto the above water jetty rocks. This maneuver would require a whole bunch of speed. It seems to have launched and spiraled, likely crushing the occupants on those rocks.
