The season has been a major disappointment for Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets. It might have just gotten worse.

The forward told ESPN.com's Stephen A. Smith on Tuesday that his troublesome left knee will end his season and that he will undergo microfracture surgery.

McGrady's name had come up earlier Tuesday in reported trade discussions between the Rockets and New Jersey Nets. The Nets were leery of McGrady's contract and health in discussions involving Nets forward Vince Carter.

McGrady had arthroscopic surgery on the knee last May and has been slow to recover. The seven-time All-Star missed much of January trying to get the knee back in shape and had an MRI last week to try to discover why it was still bothering him.

"The last couple of games, I've regressed," McGrady said during halftime of last Wednesday's game. "I've felt pain."

McGrady's numbers are down across the board this season. He is the Rockets' third-leading scorer at 15.6 points per game and is averaging 4.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest. He is shooting a career-worst 39 percent from the field.

After trading for Ron Artest in the offseason to create a triple threat with McGrady and Yao Ming, the Rockets were expected to challenge for one of the top spots in the Western Conference. But all three players have missed time due to injuries and Houston sits in fifth in the conference, with only two games separating them from the eighth and final spot.

Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire is an example of the tough road that comes with microfracture surgery. His procedure ultimately cost him all but three games of the 2005-06 season. He returned the next season, however, to play in 82 games and regained his All-Star form.

Houston is screwed. They're paying more than 1/3 of their team salary next year to a guy who won't even see the floor. This is why you don't sign guys with serious injury histories to supermax contracts.

Yao is also injury plagued and Artest is not playing well either. All this hinders them from making a strong run to the playoffs. Hope it benefits us slightly.

Amen. That's why I hope we don't make this mistake with Amare. You can't cripple your franchise for a few years just so you can get a couple of good years out of a guy. If we learned anything from Penny we learned that.

This seriously makes me want to give props to Kobe.

I remember when the big debate was "Carter or Kobe?"

Then it was "T-mac or Kobe?"

Now its "Lebron or Kobe?"

Kobe continues to be dominant while his rivals fizzle out prematurely.

I think the rockets have plenty of depth and they seem to play better without McGrady. McGrady is a chemistry killer, he's worse than AI at that, and has less skills.

the difference is that VC and TMAC didnt make others around them better. Lebron is the real deal, he is a beast that makes others better, much better.

True, theres no doubt LeBron is far superior to any version of Carter or Tmac.

It just shows how silly those arguments were.

For the record, though, I think Lebron is more "athlete" than "Basketball player".

I'll let you figure out what that means.

Wow, some people can come back in 9 months, but alot of people seem to take 12-15. If that's the case, he could miss the rest of this season, and all of the regular season next year. He could probably make it back for playoffs, or the last few games of the season.

Even then they say it takes more than 18 months for it to really heal and feel right, which would put him healthy for the 2010-2011 season. ouch.

Amare was much younger than TMac. Amare may have trouble in a few years, or since he was so young his body healed it well enough to last nearly his entire career. TMac while not old, probably won't be able to say that since he is about 6-9 years older then Amare was when he got his.

Yeah Amare had surgery Oct 18, 2005
Age = 22years 11 months

TMac (no surgery yet, but probably soon)
Age = 29 years 8 months

That's about a 7 year difference. Amare had his surgery years before his body peaks, McGrady right at peak or a year or two after. (Going on your body physically peaks around 27-29)

TMac is the Gilbert Arenas of the West. Large salary for nothing but injuries...

Agreed. I never considered TMac or VC as good as Kobe (except if you were talking purely from an offensive perspective). I don't personally know anybody who thought they were as good as Kobe overall.

LeBron on the other hand is a different story because of what you posted. He makes others around him better AND plays both sides of the ball.

In a van...down by the river.

The consensus from ROCKET fans seems to be that Artest has been conceding a bit to Yao,T-Mac etc...they'd like him to take more of a leadership role in terms of his offense. Ron Ron is having possibly his worst shooting season ever. However he does alot of other equally important things.....things that this team lacks.;)

ASSUMING that Tmac can recover from this, this might be a good thing for him

letting his back and body rest for a year or so might help him out. BUT, this kills the Rockets this season and most, if not all, of next year.
