The Omaha Nighthawks selected former Lions DE Dewayne White with the No. 1 overall pick in Wednesday's UFL Draft.

It's a good pick, and leaves us scratching our heads as to why White has drawn so little interest since the Lions released him in March. While White is injury prone, he was Detroit's best pass rusher during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He's also only 30 years old. The Nighthawks selected ex-Cardinals OLB Chike Okeafor with the first pick in the second round.

Hard to believe our starting OLB from last year couldn't make another NFL roster. Not only that, he didn't crack the first round of the UFL draft, although he was still the sixth pick since there are only five teams. I'm not expecting a ton from Porter, but he should definitely be an upgrade.

Michael Ray Garvin was selected by Las Vegas in the same round as Okeafor, and safety Dennis Keyes (He was on the practice squad, wasn't he?) drafted #36 by Sacremento, so some other Cardinal connections.

Chike was 34 in March. Not a lot of jobs for guys his age. It is why the Cards were able to pick up Porter with a reasonable contract.

I also doubt he has much interest in playing in the UFL so doubtful any team would risk a first round selection on him.

And so goes the career of the only NFL player who is an alum from my high school (West Lafayette H.S., West Lafayette, Indiana).

Thanks Chike.

That Chike was drafted in the UFL is irrelevant to whether he gets a job in the NFL this year. There are a ton of vets out there waiting on a call. One injury and the phone rings.
