I think itd be a better idea to have 1 official on the field at all times, and 10 officials in a room officiating via TV/replay at their disposal.

Every official is responsible for only WRs, Only QB, only O-lineman, etc.

Calls would be nearly 100% everytime.

Given thered be alot more because everything would be caught, but at least theyd be right.

And what happens when a fight breaks out on the field?

Stiffer fines will keep that in check. You want to fight? 100k first offense. 200k on the second. Trust me, the player will get disciplined quick.

Do you really think four 65 year old lawyers are effectively doing anything to break up a fight between a couple of dozen 300 lb athletes?

Fighting wouldn't be affected one way or another.

If a fight breaks out keep a fire hose handy. That should break it up quick.

Maybe a penalty box might be a nice touch.

Refs absolutely break up fights. Seen them get in the middle of the scrum many times over in the NFL. They put there bodies in between and the players realize it and know there is gonna be more trouble if they dont stop. To say they arent effective at all is a little jaded IMO.

+1.

Those are some big boys, with a lot of power, and they stick there faces right in the middle of all it.

Refs should get there due. I still don't know how they separate people off of fumbles.

Worth noting that PFT posted a quick follow-up article stating that the NFL denied the rumor.

The real refs are praying for this scenario to play out. And actually, it would be an interesting game to watch (once, at least). Guys will be able to get away with murder.

It'll never happen.

The whole thing would be kind of bizzare to see play out... would they run the play, then have the booth refs phone down a penalty or something? I'm sure the home fans would love cheering for a huge play, only for the ref to go "just kidding, Nerdy McStatboy up in the booth just called it back" after the play is over.

The technology has advanced so they can call it outside the field?

Yeah right.

Wouldn't that also be hypocritical. Basically everything would be in review. So who would draw the line of what penalties and such are or aren't reviewed.

Not only is it unrealistic as we don't need replay long times for everything (even if they sometime occur naturally with refs on the field), it could happen a bunch more time.

What happens if the equipment fails?

Again, it would make a mockery of the rules where certain things are reviewable and certain things aren't.

Sounds like a bad idea that can't possibly be done unless the league wants a potential fiasco on its hands.

Once this bad idea blows up for everyone to see how could the refs lose then? It's pretty stupid to risk the integrity of the game, injuries, and people (players/coaches) livelihoods in various forms at risk for not agreeing to a few percentage points or thereabouts for 50 or so refs. What are they quibbling over in total, a couple million dollars?

Guess they would rather pay some 20 year old ten bucks an hour (okay maybe a bit extreme...but if you never see them, those specialist could be in Bangalore for all we know).

Ohh yeah, and what if a fight happens on the field? Hell the players could sue the league if a fight couldn't be broken up and someone got injured. Might as well use Cyclops to determine the spotting of the ball, or those markers the TV uses.....you know the ones that can be off by a yard regularly.
