I liked Cosell. Underneath all that bombastic pomposity, he was best in small doses. was an intelligent man who was a keen observer and wordsmith.

I'll never forget the night he told us John Lennon wad dead. What? No. What did he say? And then everyone looking at each other trying to process what he'd said. If I live to be 90 that night will remain burned into my brain.

I agree. I also remember that night. Howard was, if not speechless, incredulous at the news. IIRC he lived or had lived in the same building with him? Sad, sad night.

All of the above is true, but he was a, "One of a kind" personality. Love him or hate him, you just couldn't ignore him. Of all the posters here, Mitch probably knew him the best. JMO.

Me too we got up packed a few things and jumped on the subway and headed to Central Park. When we got off the subway we walked right next to the Dakoda Apartments where he was shot and killed. What a day it was at central park and for a few days after.

My dad used to play cards with Howard Cosell on the train from NYC to the burbs. My dad loved the guy.

I thought he was a hilarious kind of bombastic.

I will never forget the interview he had with Muhammed Ali:

Ali: "All I know is, Howard, I AM the GREATEST!"

Cosell: "But, Mohammed, how can you be so truculent?" Cosell points the mike right to Ali's lips.

Ali: Hababadahabadahabada..."Now, Howard, I don't know what truculent means, but it don't matter, because I AM the GREATEST!"

Like John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Ali and Cosell were a match for the ages.

Loved Howard's halftime recap of the Sunday games. Epic.

I liked him on MNF. His stint ran it's course but it was a good one while it lasted.

Beyond the sun.
Hypocritical sycophant that always felt the need to prove he was the smartest person in the room. Whenever Howard was criticized he would angrily go on-and-on until it was not about the sport being broadcast, but about Cosell's ego. Many of the MNF games he was in the booth, I thought, this is the game Frank Gifford punches Howard Cosell. Howard's final years will be remembered for his bitterness, and his mentality of 'Fine, I'm taking my ball and going home.' I always imagined a retired Cosell sitting on a porch yelling, "Get off my lawn, you little monkeys!"
