Great player. Could have played in any era, as far as I am concerned, these days as a 3-4 OLB. Amazing quickness.

And, one of the best characters the NFL ever produced.

I will miss him and his whit.

Seemed like a guy who really enjoyed the game, and appreciated what he got from it.

RIP.

RIP "Secretary of Defense"

You were a great, great football player. The "Fearsome Foursome" was such an awesome DLine.

What memories from those days I have. While never being a Rams fan I remember how tough Deacon and those Rams teams were.

Another great one gone

One of my favorite all-time players. This is a sad, sad day for Rams fans. He was special.

RIP Deacon. The Fearsome Foursome will never be forgotten. Thanks for all the great years.

Yep the Deacon was a great one no doubt . Weird how the 4 of them turned out , I'm sure most of us that watched them play would have picked Rosey (weight problems) as the first to leave us , and now he is the only one left .

RIP. Lundy

RIP. Olsen

And Now , RIP. Jones

He was the original sack master. If they ever choose to recognize sack stats prior to 1982(when they started keeping the stat), he'd immediately be the single season record holder with 26 and 24. Both set in 14 game seasons. Goes to show you how much of a farce Strahan's record is.

Rams vs Vikings of late 60s and early 70s was what NFL football should have been about. They should have worked to preserve the game in that fashion, instead of the mamsy pamsy QB protected game it has become. I am glad I got to enjoy the love of the game when men were allowed to be men on the field and off.

I would have thought that too. Wasn't Roman Gabriel the QB during that time for the Rams.

Yes. Head Coach was George Allen. Those were great years to be a Rams fan.

(Coach Allen's daughter named one of her sons after Deacon Jones, BTW.)

When I was in Pop Warner this is the guy my dad showed me old film from. I was head slapping the crap out of kids and it was perfectly legal at the time. Parents would actually yell and scream at me and the refs for allowing it. Good Times.

He seemed so bad ass that even the Grim Reaper wouldn't dare mess with him.

I can remember some of the Chiefs-Raiders games from that same time as well (my dad was a big Chiefs fan). Holy Cripes! They were bloodbaths.

His era produced so many of most feared defensive players in league history. Can you imagine how many concussions he caused with his patented "Head Slap" move? Definitely has to be in discussion of greatest DE ever to play the game.

The NFL will now be giving out the "Deacon Jones award" to the leader in sacks at the end of each NFL year.
