Of all the reports I've read, not one has mentioned that it was a noncontact drill. Not saying it was or wasn't just haven't read that anywhere but here.

http://bengalswire.usatoday.com/2017/08/01/vontaze-burfict-tackles-gio-bernard-starts-fight/

Bengals Wire title on USA Today:

Vontaze Burfict tackles Gio Bernard in non-contact drill, starting fight

The report does add that they resolved it pretty quickly:

While it was a textbook tackle, it occurred during a non-contact drill with a running back only a few months removed from ACL surgery. In the video, running backs coach Kyle Caskey comes up to the pile upset, getting a shove in return from one of the defenders. That shove caused both the offense and defense to get a little heated to protect their individual guys.

Though many will be quick to jump at Burfict’s history of “cheap shots,” Bernard called it out as simply an accident. The two were seen laughing together on the sidelines afterward, so it appears there was no harm done to either player or his feelings.

Still. Bernard might have understood it, but I can see why Bernard's coach would be pissed about it.

So you wouldn't have a problem with a Cardinal player popping another player who is just off surgery during a non-contact drill when he wasn't expecting a hit?

No.

So if Honey Badger slammed into an unsuspecting DJ's knee during a non-contact drill--when DJ isn't expecting to be hit--and blew his knee out, costing him the season, you wouldn't have a single problem with it. Got you. I sure hope the coaching staff has FAR better common sense than that.

Apparently, some are struggling to understand what "non-contact" means. If it's a non-contact drill, don't contact the other person. Simple. Burfict, who has a very long history of non-compliant and reckless behavior, either was too dumb to understand this concept, or chose to to not listen. Fortunately, Gio is fine, but had he re-injured that knee as a result of Burfict being Burfict, it would've been awful.

Vontaze is trying to rename personal fouls, "Burficts."

That five game suspension is a bad bad joke. If that hit deserves 5 games then the NFL might aswell get rid of hitting all together.

Yeah i dont fully understand this one, I mean, the ball wasnt being thrown to him but that is like a 5-15 yard penalty, not a 5 game suspension.

I'm pretty sure it's cumulative, and not just for that specific hit.

That's pretty much the only recourse against someone like Burfict. Keep escalating the punishment for every incident.

Either he gets penalized out of the League, or he regains his senses.

My vote is for the former.

Someone needs to inspect that dude's head. Literally.

I think he has an Aaron Hernandez level of CTE in that brain of his.
