As a large man, I for one have always been offended by the "Giants," and of course as a pilot I have always felt discriminated by the "Jets," and since my great-great grandmother was assaulted by a miner, I have been particularly enraged that the "49ers" were allowed to keep their name. And let's not forget my Uncle Milt was attacked by a bear, so that's out. Oh, and not happy that looting, pillaging criminals and rapists such as "Raiders," "Buccaneers," and "Vikings" are allowed in the league. The "Titans" are religious figures in ancient Greece, so I'm not sure how a team disrespecting religious figures snuck in there... and don't get me started on the Browns.

I guess the only one that doesn't offend me is the "Chiefs" because naming a team after Native Americans as a symbol of pride, loyalty, and strength has always resonated with me. Wait, which team are we all up in arms about again?

They would change their name if the league forced them to, which is unlikely.

Name Identification is a substantial component of the value of a business.
The Redskins probably have more name familiarity than, "Obama."
The Redskins have been, or are the #1 rated team on the cash valuation list of NFL teams.

People have been complaining for a long time about various Indian named team. It seems to always blow-over after a while and I do not recall of any team that has changed their name due to complaining.

If these people wanted to do something real, then they should give the country back to the Indians and shut-up about team names.

Then they won't be the Redskins.

I like this thread, the questions are easy.

They are going to have to change it and that's a good thing.

Stanford did it as has several college teams over the years.

I'm amazed that in 2013 people still act like they don't get the name is intended to be a slur.

Jack Kent Cooke the prior owner spent years and thousands of dollars running an intentional disinformation campaign to protect the name. he went so far as to hire an actress, who it appears wasn't even Native American, and have her portray a Native American princess. everytime it would come up he'd trot her out and have her give a little speech where she talked about how the name made her feel proud of her heritage. After she passed away someone did some research and found out the tribe she claimed to belong to was not real, and that she wasn't using her real name and it was very unlikely she wasn even Native American. I think it's pretty obvious if an owner goes to those lengths, he knew something was wrong.

I've also never understood the money angle, will people be mad when they change it, sure, but eventually Washington fans will go out and buy new hats, new shirts, new jerseys, and they'll make a ton of money as the fans repopulate their closets with new logo clothes.

Agreed - it is a racist slur.

All these other examples are false equivalncies - insulting to be brought up

I think they should call them the Foreskins.

Much ado about nothing. The name was NOT meant to disparage a race. Redskins was not considered a racial slur back when this team picked a name. The team is a symbol of strong, competitive, rugged individuals. How can anyone find that offensive?

The problem is that we have become so PC oriented, even a small group can create a stir because our news media would rather sensationalize than report actual news. When I was working on the Navaho reservation a few years back, the Redskins was one of the more prominent teamswear. Apparently they didn't have a problem with it.

They should change the name to Pasty White Dudes to honor Jack Kent Cooke. See how that goes over.

Ya, if the owner says they will never change the name, why does this keep popping up?

Because in today's world, 10% of the population can tell the other 90% what they are going to do and how they will act. Majority rules no longer apply.

I really do not think it will be changed in the short term. I respect the rights of a private business owner to name their business what they choose to. I think we need to be careful telling someone else what to do with their private property. The name may be viewed as insulting by a small class of people, but as long as someone is not being physically hurt, the owner is entitled to the freedom of speech. Our founding father's thought this right so important they made it the first amendment of the Bill of Rights.

The proper way to show your frustration in today's society would be to boycott and not purchase things from the Washington Redskins. Find a new team, do not watch your team when playing in Washington. If enough people are truly offended, sales will go down and Daniel Snyder will be forced to re-evaluate his stance. If the offended people continue to support the Redskins franchise financially, then it is a sign there is not enough public support for change quite yet. It does not mean it will never be changed, just that current public support is greater than current public disapproval.

For pure whimsy, click on the link in the brief article regarding the contest. Tons of logo and helmet ideas around the three moniker choices. Choose the eliminated tab to see some really horrendous attempts... Gack!

Not quite right, The wealthiest 1% tells the other 99% what to do by controlling the economy and politics. No wait the politicians are part of that 1%. Never mind.

If 90% of the world thought it was appropriate to use the N Word for an NFL team would that make it ok?

it's an insult, the word was adopted by white men to be an insult, theres tons of evidence and research on the subject. The dispute is because it appears the early origins were actually Native Americans using it to differentiate different tribes but like many words, it got "taken" over the years and became an insult.
