I see the "Warriors" is one of the proposed alternatives. I remember in NM, the Ruidoso High School "Warriors" were considered offensive because it still conjured connotations of warring savages with the nearby Mescalaro Apache Tribe.

Bottom line, anything can be stretched to be offensive to someone. But "Redskins" doesn't require much stretching at all, does it?

The thing is, there's more than meets the eye with this case. If the Redskins cave and change their name, it could open up a can of worms and send things down a very steep slippery slope. Any idiot will be able to sue a team in any sport claiming that the team name is offensive.*

*-For the record, I'm not calling this group fighting the Deadskins idiots. Attention seeking ******, yes. Idiots, no.

Any idiot can sue right now. Hell some idiot 2 years ago sued a reporter for defamation claiming anti semitism because of devil horns and a goatee.

Idiots are allowed to sue, and judges are allowed to dismiss the suits.

Also - The word 'Oklahoma' is Choctaw for 'red people.' Let's change that state's name...

No kidding. BTW, we have Redskins in our own state:

Red Mesa High Redskins

Clearly these Indians don't mind the name...it is an Indian school on Indian land. The student body is 99.3 percent Indian. Maybe the government should pressure them to change their name too?

:lame:

Maybe this is in the same category as blacks calling themselves n******s. They are allowed to. It's their culture to do with as they please. Outsiders should not trespass. Self deprecation is a personal choice. Public deprecation is not.

That doesn't mean all Native Americans feel that way. One of the casinoes we used to go to outside Sacramento had an NFL pickem game, for Washington they wouldn't use the name it just said Washington football team.

I mean a lot of people in the South still think it's perfectly fine to fly a Confederate flag, do you think the NFL would allow Washington to change their name and adopt the confederate flag as their logo?

The confederate flag has taken on new meaning on the west coast but in the south it still is what it was.

That's another debate but it didn't happen on the West Coast. Several racist hate groups adopted the Confederate Flag as their symbol. It started with the KKK but apparently really exploded during the integration of Southern Universities(forced integration). Several groups like the Dixie Crats adopted the Confederate Flag as their symbol as they fought integration.

It's very similar to the Washington situation, the people who defend flying the confederate flag(like souther rock bands) say the original meaning was about the 13 confederate states who wanted state rights and were willing to secede from the Union to get them. One of those "state rights" was slavery. Unfortunately as a result, it's been "co-opted" to where many racist organizations have adopted the flag. Right or wrong that's apparently what happened with Redskin.

Sounds like a whole lot of indians aren't offended to me. Good for you Dan Snyder and your stand!

I did a little research on that last night for kicks, Snyder is citing a 10 year old study done by the Annenberg folks. they started polling people in Sept 03 and finished in Oct 04. They polled 768 people, and omitted Alaska and Hawaii. Alaska has about 100,000 native Americans that were omitted from the poll. Hawaii is one of the most liberal states in the US. They polled by calling people on the telephone who had identified themselves as "Indians", they didn't do any verification. The prior poll being cited didn't even disclose their methodology so Annenberg at least did that but in doing so they got assailed for all sorts of biases in their polling method.

But in effect it's ironic that people are saying we should not let a very small minority of people who say they're offended force a name change, and their defense is a poll that talked to 768 people 10 years ago.

Funny, I meant something totally different. Out here the confederate flag seems to notate rebellion more than racism. 1

13 colonies were the original intent and the 13 colonies wanted slavery, yes. Thats why the racists picked it up. but my point was about it being considered a rebel flag out here vs a racist flag.

Colonies and confederate states? You lost me. And what is the ethnic makeup of anyone who thinks the confederate flag stands for rebellion, but not rebellion for the sake of being able to have slavery...

To me, seeing the Confederate Flag means I should immediately pull out a lighter and start shouting "Free Bird" at the top of my lungs. Don't know anything about this rebellion you speak of.

Anybody that believes this name was chosen with racial intent is absurd.

Move on. We have a lot bigger fish to fry these days.

Skin needs to be grown a little thicker. No matter what color it is.

I for one have never been offended at being called a cracker. And if there was an upstart franchise being born and were going to be called the South Dakota Crackers, I would'nt give two craps about it....but hey, that's just me.

IE like crispy said a skinnard or PanterA concert. Pantera does promote the confederate flag for racist reasons, it was trend breaking/rebellion/ass kicking reasons. I feel different regions have different interpretations on the confederate.

I think it will forever keep its racist stigma anyway.

Kinda like how nazis turned an indian symbol into a symbol of hate. It will forever remain that way.

I think it's a question of when and not if they change the nickname. Cleveland should do the same.
