Does anyone want the job. And what the heck are they watiing for. All the good assistants are probably gone and they will have to pick from the scrap heap. This has trouble written all over it.

Raiders | Petrino said no three times
Thu, 9 Feb 2006 19:50:57 -0800

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports University of Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino confirmed that he turned down the Oakland Raiders head coaching job for a third time Wednesday, Feb. 8. The latest offer would have paid him $18 million over five years. Petrino told Mortensen that he was flattered by the Raiders' persistence but that he was committed to Louisville and did not feel his family was ready for a move. Petrino is the only coach to whom the Raiders have offered the position.

Turned down the offer 3 times for a lot of money to boot.

Raiders | Whisenhunt did not receive offer
Thu, 9 Feb 2006 13:04:48 -0800

ESPNews reports Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt did not receive an offer from the Oakland Raiders to become head coach and has decided to remain with the Steelers' coaching staff.

Did he not recieve an offer or did he decline the offer. Something tells me it was the later of the two after meeting with the controlling Davis.

Raiders | Shell the leading candidate?
Thu, 9 Feb 2006 19:48:07 -0800

ESPN.com reports Art Shell has emerged as the leading candidate to become the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Only after their top 2 choices declined 3 times between the 2.
Would shell be able to handle todays players. Same situation as Gibbs as guess after being away from the game for a while.

Raiders | Team has mystery candidate in mind

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports that there is yet another "mystery candidate" with considerable NFL experience who is a candidate to become the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

They contacted me too, but I turned them down.

Thu, 9 Feb 2006 21:03:32 -0800

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports no name HeavyB3 has been contacted by the Oakland Raiders as a strong candidate for their vacant head coaching position. HeavyB3, a Cardinals fan with absolutely no experience coaching football, is said to have rejected their offer.

I think the problem with the Raiders job is the control that Al Davis holds in terms of personell decisions.

Honestly if you are a HC, would you want your nuts on the line coaching players who you don't want or didn't bring in? Can't say that I would.

The reason they can't get anyone is the same reason Mularkey left Buffalo. In TSN it says the main reason Mularkey left Buffalo was that owner Ralph Wilson said he was going to become more involved. I guess he was already pretty overbearing by sending messages to the coaching box and pointing out trends during the game. Also, he would call them up for hours on weekends pestering them about things.

They contacted me, but Al Davis wouldn't guarantee me 500 hot redheads a season. I said, 'damnit Al, I need me those redheads!' And he said, 'who do you think I am, Hugh Hefner?'

Hey, I'm still looking for employment... Maybe I'll drop my resume off.

Since it's the Raiders, do I have to fill in the part on the application where it asks about a criminaql record to do they just assume that everyone has one?

I predict that the two worst teams next year will be the Raiders and the Jets.

Hard to disagree with you on the Raiders, but not sure about the Jets.

One of the worst NFL coaches took a hike and they dumped their lunatic GM. They have some very nice core players and money to spend. Tough division to compete in, but they had a slew of injuries. Saints would be my choice to sit next to the Raiders. They have nothing and a crazy owner.

I don't think Shell would have a hard time with the players...He hasn't been out of coaching...He just hasn't been a head coach.

Yeah we know, hence the term "Where else" has he coached.

He was fired back in 1994.

What has he done since then.

Wow.. Nice to see Buddy Ryan's still remembered after all these years :trout:

Seriously speaking, it's pretty bad when coordinators and coaches of mid-major programs (sorry, but Louisville's still got a ways to go before they become a "major program") are turning the job down. How the mighty have fallen. It's almost hard to believe this team was one of the most consistant teams of the late 90s, early 00s.

I really think it's going to be Art Shell. He's the only coach that Davis admiited he SHOULN'T have fired. Add to it that he's an ex-Raider & you have the next coach of the Raiders.

Raiders | Shell receives a second interview; could be hired soon
Fri, 10 Feb 2006 14:49:56 -0800

Jim Jenkins, of the Sacramento Bee, reports Art Shell had a second interview with the Oakland Raiders Friday, Feb. 10. He was interviewed for the job a week ago by Raiders owner Al Davis. Indications are the two are already discussing contract terms and how to quickly assemble a staff following the firing of head coach Norv Turner Jan. 3, a team spokesman said. A press conference to announce Shell's hiring could be as soon as Saturday, Feb. 11, the spokesman said.
