Our starting rotation, what's it going to be?

It's no secret that we have a log jam of starters. We currently have 8 guys that could fit into one of the five starter spots.

Ian Kennedy
Wade Miley
Trevor Cahill
Brandon McCarthy
Patrick Corbin
Tyler Skaggs
Randall Delgado
Daniel Hudson

Obviously Hudson is out of the conversation until at least the all star break but with how his rehab seems to be going well have a tough decision to make in the second half of the season with him. I'd have to imagine that Kennedy, Miley and Cahill have three of the five spots. I also feel comfortable that well see McCarthy in the rotation, so that leaves Corbin, Skaggs and Delgado to fight for the 5th spot.

What's your take on what our rotation will look like this year?

Kennedy needs to return to his 2011 form... He was extremely inconsistent in 2012.
That said, I think you're right about the top 4 slots... Kennedy, Miley, Cahill, McCarthy. I believe the 5th spot will be won by Corbin. Skaggs and Delgado will be in Reno most likely to start the year.
And when Hudson returns... who knows... Hopefully, the top 4 will have performed well enough that Hudson can't come back as a starter. However, that's very unlikely. I would guess that he will most likely replace one of the 4 as at minimum, one of them will not have performed well enough to hold down the job...

2012 Ian Kennedy was the exact same pitcher as 2011 Ian Kennedy sans bad luck on balls in play and home runs in 2012 and the opposite in 2011 The true Ian Kennedy is probably in between (3.5-3.6 era and 190-200 K's.)

When Hudson returns, he should obviously return to the rotation. He is right behind IPK in terms of skillset.

Miley on the other hand, I can see a drop in his performance this year. Just seems like last year was a huge fluke although it really depends on him limiting his walks.

Skaggs should be in the rotation if he performs on par with Corbin in spring training. There is no reason for him to be in Reno, and I believe he's ready right now. There is too much potential there to send him to a hitters league to face the same ol lame AAA hitters.

I'm telling you right now. Tyler Skaggs needs to be in that rotation.

Barring ARZ acting on the rumors they are interested in acquiring RHP Rick Porcello from DET, I think the rotation ends up:

Kennedy
Cahill
Miley
McCarthy
Corbin

I'll have to take issue with that observation. IMHO, Kennedy's failure last year was due in large part to his inability to keep the ball down, and the more fatigued he got, the more he left 'em up. I thought it was pretty obvious and it was commented upon more than once from the booth.

Yeah, he lost some control from 2011 and he doesn't have a single overwhelming pitch. I'll leave the rotation to Gibson but I want to see that Skaggs curve ball every 5th day.

He's not. Designated for assignment today.

Small correction. He was optioned today, not DFA'ed. Huge difference. If he were DFA'ed the D-Backs would have 10 days to release him, trade him, or have him accept a minor league assignment.

Chuckle of the day

Everyone needs a smile to start the day and I had one looking at the list of today's (spring training) games in the AzRepublic.

It lists each game's teams, starting pitchers, location and time.

One read Rockies' (ss) TBD at Rangers' TBD, Surprise, 1:05 p.m.

Yes, I guess if the starting pitchers haven't been determined, it's a surprise!

It's spring. No more mornings in the 30's. Not yet time for 100's in the afternoons. And the Boys of Spring are getting closer to start the season.

Happy day, everyone! :)

Just based on what I saw last season, and not this spring, I would loooove to see Corbin get a shot in the rotation. Dude was impressive last year.

Kennedy
Miley
Cahill
McCarthy
Corbin

When Hudson gets back, he'll obviously be in the mix, but this is what I like for now.

Is Delgado still in spring training? If so I would certainly say he has a shot at the rotation as well.

It appears he's still on the team, hasn't been optioned down. I see him in the pen to get some experience to start the year, but anything can happen!

Looking at the numbers between Corbin and Delgado again, I really think Corbin has the edge up to this point. Half the runs allowed, and only 1 bad outing really. Delgado's numbers are a bit skewed though thanks to 2 bad outings.

I think the main reason Delgado is still around is because of Miley's dead arm. If Miley has to hit the DL, Delgado breaks camp with the team. If Miley can hit his pitch count in his next game, then Delgado is sent down. I read that is Miley hits his pitch count without issue, he will miss one start the first week and pitch a simulated game instead to get his pitch count up a little bit and them be ready the next week. Since one guy usually gets skipped the first week because of the funky scheule, it actually works out perfectly.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that Wade Miley will start the fourth game of the season if he comes out of Saturday's outing healthy.
Miley has gone through a dead arm period recently, but he's feeling better and should be ready to roll on April 5 in Milwaukee. The D'Backs are going with Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy in the opening series against the Cardinals. Mar. 26 - 9:11 pm et

In case anyone was not aware, but looks like now they would not skip him after all. His arm must be better than thought.

Patrick Corbin pitches a 6-inning shutout with 7 strikeouts vs. the Reds at Chase Field as spring training winds down.

'No doubt he'll be our #5 starter.
