What you figure will happen is that 4 or 5 guys will make the active roster or PS and that perhaps 1 or 2 of them will actually start (with the faint hope that one of them will emerge as a star).

One thing we don't know yet - Some of these guys probably have "back stories" - i.e. injury challenges, an early off-the-field mistake etc. - that might suggest they'll be better looking forward than their resume's suggest.

One thought about Highsmith. Size-wise isn't he kind of like Daryl Washington? Reading between the lines of Wiz's post-draft presser, is it possible that with Dansby out and smaller, quicker ILB's in, that the plan all along was to have big guys like Watson and Dan Williams protect smaller, more mobile LB's and allow them to cruise around and flow to the ball?

Finally, a guard with a name like "Moosman" belongs on this year's All Name Team.

Yes but Highsmith is not nearly as athletic.

Could very well, although Washington has got a height and speed advantage over Highsmith, and is brought in as a replacement for Dansby, whereas Highsmith started in his only two (pretty unimpressive) starts in place of the injured thumper Hayes with a smaller NT B-Rob in front of him. So I think you could be right, this could mean a whole new start for Highsmith.

If it is true then that means a whole lotta pressure for a 1st year NT to perform though, and i don't know if that's justified to expect that from him already.

We're forgetting that Dan Williams won't be expected to go it alone - Gabe Watson (with a healthier knee this year) figures to co-exist with Williams in rotation, so that we should always have one fresh space-eater in there at all times, surrounded by Docket and Campbell at both ends (backed up by the bigger and tougher Branch at either end as the situation dictates).

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but as an UDFA we should take a flyer on Tony Washington. He hasn't been in trouble since he was 16 (as reprehensible as what he did was, people CAN change and he was just a kid when he made that God awful decision). If Vick can get a second chance and Big Ben will get a second chance (or is this his third?), then Washington should at least get a shot.

Low risk at this point and high reward.

True, but i think we shouldn't overlook the fact that it might not be Gabe's knees that causes him to underachieve, underachieve to our expectations that is, since he wasn't that terrible. With the learning curve awaiting Big Dan Williams (sorry, i've been watching some Tennessee college games, and that's what the commentators called him all the time), we might have to work with Gabe as the better option and the starter, and he was part of the rotation last season, and thus part of some of the problems we encountered. In the end i believe our D-line will be awesome, but it might take some time, and a thumper a la Hayes (plus back-up thumper) for it to work in the beginning.

No. Kent Somers said the Cards were looking to add around 10 UDFAs and we are already at 8. I'd like to see a few more but I probably wouldn't count on it.

In a lot of ways this UDFA list intrigues me more than the last quarter of our draft. I don't know much about them, but that Jefferson and Smith interest me. I've been thinking all along that we need a young speed back to give us some wiggle. LSH was nice as a third option, but Smith looks more the part.

I don't know much about them, but that Jefferson and Smith interest me. .

For those not aware -

Jefferson is 6-0 186 and ran a 4.51 forty; but what's impressive is his 44-inch vertical jump and 10-6 broad jump - indicators of his explosiveness and agility (he also ran a 6.73 three-cone).

He may not be as fast as DRC and plenty-raw, but I think a lot of us see similarities. He also returns kicks.

I'm not sure we have room (getting practice reps) for another OLB.

The roster, even for preseason, doesn't allow to have 10 players at every position. Yep I exagerated to make a point.

Im loving the following pick-ups so far

1. CB A.J Jefferson, Fresno State- I was actually calling for us to draft this kid in the 4th so it just goes to show how much i like him though tbh most of what i know of him is from the scouting combine

2. QB Max Hall, BYU- I thought this kid would actually drafted but im glad he didnt cause he nice developmental project to have in training camp. He is worth a training camp invite in my humble opinion. He has decent arm, really good decision making and improving accuracy as well as arm strenght. Nice little pick up i think

3. WR Stephen Williams, Toledo. I actually managed to see this kid last year and i remember him as a big lanky receiver ,something like 6'5 210, and he looked a bit like Sidney Rice physically. Obviously he is nothing like the prospect Rice was but i liked the kids hands and productivity on the day. He doesnt seem all that physical for his physique though so he would have to work on that but he's a good pick up to bring to camp.

4. RB Alfonso Smith, Kentucky- Ive just watched some footage of this guy and i like his overall make-up. He is very fast and has a real good first step that allows him to skip tackles smoothly and get into a good rythym. He is a solid receiver as well and tends to take up good positions on the field when running routes. His biggest problem is that he's struggled with injuries but i think he could have a decent future as a special teamer.

Caution - Wait for Official Cardinal Release...

LeGarrette Blount - originally headed for SF - changed his mind is now going elsewhere (I believe to Tennessee). Although he apparently did not impress anyone with his blocking skills in post-season workouts, I thought he ran as effectively inside as any college RB I saw this past season. I'm glad the Niners aren't going to get him (Maybe we'll get even luckier and QB Jarett Brown will change his mind about SF as well).

There may be other last minute shifting so we'd be smart to wait for the official word to come down.
