Our UDFA activity so far

Boy our need for KR/PR is a whole lot bigger then i though. In all seriousness im modestly pleased as we have taken some UDFA's i like but we havent even attempted to look for a potential SILB or any type of ILB in the UDFA. I can understand the Cardinals thinking there is no-one worthy of taking but im thinking somebody like Micah Johnson may have been had before the Giants took him late last night as a trialist to their minicamp.

Monty-----I appreciate your concern for ILB, but remember this also: l. Both Graves and Whiz have said that they intend to add another couple of players as we go on down the road this off-season. I am sure they are watching the wires, and probably have pegged at least one CB and one ILB that they think will come free. 2. Don't forget, that even without Schofield, we seem to have a surplus of OLB/rush types, AND that Haggans has successfully played the WILB position in the past. In a pinch, I am sure they could move him back inside until they can bring in a replacement. So,-----while there is concern, there is NOT desparation at this point, and I don't anticipate that we will reach that stage either.

Here is some stuff on Williams the WR from Toledo...

Williams joins an Arizona team that recently traded wide receiver Anquan Boldin, the franchise’s record-holder with 586 receptions, to the Ravens.

“It’s a good feeling, Williams said. “It’s a good program that was just in the Super Bowl two years ago, they are winners.”

Williams said that he had “around 15 teams” contact him following the Draft and Arizona was “exactly where I want to be.”

“The type of offense they run, they throw the ball a lot,” Williams said. It’s like a fast tempo, just like I did in college at Toledo. I feel like I can get the ball in my hands. It’s a good situation because they need receivers. They let a couple of receivers go so they have a lot of voids to fill so they are looking for me to fill a void.”

“The Cardinals were looking for guys for guys to come in and have a definite impact,” Beckman said. “Steve gets to go down there with Larry Fitzgerald, what a great guy to learn from, and play for the Cardinals organization. That’s a win-win for anybody to go in there and learn from the likes of one of the top receivers in the NFL.”

Fitzgerald, a four-time pro bowl receiver, will be there to help Williams learn to play against NFL competition.

“It’s going to be good [playing with Fitzgerald],” Williams said. “I see a person playing at a high level every day. I have no choice but to play at a high level and just learn from him and take bits and pieces from his game just to perfect mine.”

Williams signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals and expects to make an impact right away. Only four-year veteran Steve Breaston and three-year player Early Doucet have holds on receiver positions.

“It would have been a good feeling to get drafted, but at the position I was in I was able to get on a team that really needs me,” Williams said. “They expect me to come in and make an impact [immediately]. I know I’m not going to come in and start, but I will have some role in the offense and that’s big to me.

“I think I’m in a great position not just trying to fight to stay on the team or to stay on the practice squad but now I’m on a team where I can play in my first year.”

Has anyone ever seen him play? I assume we keep 5 WRs but could possibly keep 6 so we have at least 1 and maybe 2 positions up for grabs.

Do you have any proof of this, or are you just going off what others are saying? He doesn't have the skillset for the spot and didn't play it with any consistency in Pitt......I have no idea where this assessment comes from.

I was only going by the fact that he played it some in Pittsburgh BD.

Micah Johnson, like Ali Highsmith, was a productive player in college who is slow as hell and posted a terrible 40 time at the combine. A 4.9 forty is not going to get it done in the NFL, there is a reason why nobody drafted him. Signing him might give you peace of mind by adding young depth at ILB but he wouldn't see the field outside of maybe special teams play and that's if he could make it onto the final roster. I agree that 40 times can be overrated, but a poster on another site made a list of ILB's that ran a 4.9+ or slower over the past 5 years and none of them have done anything productive in the NFL and that's if they're lucky enough to still be in the NFL. I'm pretty sure if you combined all of their tackles together it was like 40.

I was only going by the fact that he played it some in Pittsburgh BD.

Watched Pitt for years and I don't remember this, I saw him play more DE than ILB.

There is no desperation though it would've been wise IMHO to address this need with the best opportunity they had i.e. the draft.

187 i think you're arguement does have some solidity to it but i dont put such a huge emphasis on the 40 times if i feel the way the guy plays is fast enough and i got the feel that Johnson doesnt let his speed hamper his attacking style much if at all. Also remember we're talking about a UDFA here so when you look at the fact that Johnson was productive at college even with his lack of speed and he was rated quite highly by several draft guru's it would've been worth a try out at camp at the least for me. TBH its a minor point really and im certainly not really loosing any sleep over it.

They should give draft grades one full year later IMO.

We get grades as the draft is going on, just after the draft, a month after the draft and then 1yr, 2yrs etc. It's all part of the process and human nature.

I fully agree with you if your point is that these early grades don't mean much at all.

I understand what both SoCal and Cardiac say about not placing to much into early draft grades but IMHO both the Seahawks and the niners have had excellent drafts and have both become that much stronger because of it. I dont want to hijack this thread but if we were to look into the draft in detail id rank both these teams in the top 5 best drafts this year. I still think they both have lots of wholes left and i still fancy the Cardinals to still clinch the NFC West but it is going to be a lot tighter this year.

Highly doubt Clausen was in our top 10. If he were we had 2 chances to pick him and didn't when we picked our 11th and 12th rated players.
