I wont mention the Defense schemes yet becuase Wilson hasnt even played close to the box yet. So we arent even using one of our bread and butter schemes yet on D. But there are clear cut issues with the D and they seem to be the same exact issues as last season.

1. Memo to the players on D - There is a difference between being aggresive and just plain old over pursuing. We are just plain old over pursuing, not taking good angles, and not keeping contain what so ever. That isn't aggressive, thats just bad fundamentals.

2. Is containment being taught at all on the edges because it hasn't happened once yet. And Berry since he has been here is still the biggest offender. And the lack of contain and over pursuit is the reason why we are for a 2nd year on a row getting destroyed on counters, reverses, and any other kind of mis direction play. We will continue to give up 5-10 yard runs until that is fixed no matter who is playing or what scheme is called for.

3. Overall the D is playing undisciplined, over pursuit happy, lack of good angles, and just plain old horrible read a react defense.

4. Hope the continued really soft zone schemes are just a preseason thing.

5. Those front starting 4 cant create pressure on a regular basis to save their lives. One don't need just sporadic spurts of pass rush it needs to be consistent. And we cant rely on blitzing all the time to get it done either.

Besides the D's overall lack of anything good, there are only two other things that jump out at my right away without re watching the game and deserve to be in my bag-O-crap list, continued crappy play of the crappy special teams coverage units(don't even want to talk about it), and our 2nd and 3rd unit OT's stink. I could make a longer list on the D and the special teams coverage units but why bother.

Now on to more happy thoughts -

1. Our special team return unit will be so much better with Breaston, and good to see him make some WR plays as well.
2. Our interior OL looked much better in pass pro, but I didnt see any improvement in any kind of run blocking push.
3. Brown although not great did play better then I thought he would. Good learning curve so far.
4. Watson - He was chasing down plays all over the place, all over the field, and was in the picture on 95% of all of the plays on D. He was just a 1/2 a step behind on making 4 really great plays on D that I remember. He said during the game that he plans on losing 10 more lbs before the season starts and should gain that extra 1/2 step that he was missing on dominating this game IMO.
5. Arrington - Good hard block on a return play, good hard run on a return play and instead of running out of bounce put his shoulder down to get a few extra yards, 2 really good LB blitz pickups on 3rd down, and a key block on Boyds long run.
6. Matt - 7 of 7 and one TD. Good smart fast decision on the goal line.
7. Could Rackers be back? With the crappy play of our coverage units it is nice to see that he has booted the kickoffs into the end zone every kickoff so far in preseason.

Nothing else good really stands out in my mind.

You would have to think so. Whiz has praised the Steelers defense about it's agressivness and wanting the same thing here. Hard to think he would tolerate using so much soft zone.

Sounds like the last few years ...

Should Whiz have replaced Clancy P ... ??

I'm thinking that he should have brought in his own guy ...

I thought we came out on both sides pretty flat but the offense picked it up pretty good and drove down the field. The D on the other hand was....ehh...not so great BUT it's pre-season and that gives 'em time to work on all of these things

The oline opened up some enormous holes...HUGE. Edge ran into them and looked like he thought they'd collapse...he hesitated and stuttered but the holes remained. He'd have had huge yards if he had just hit the monster truck size holes.

I just got back from the game....

The sequence after the end-around pass play from Boldin was a real downer.

1st down .... "False start #75" (Thought we weren't going to hear that anymore?)

4th and 1.... (Remember the penalty?) Edge gets stuffed.

Defense now, can still keep them pinned and keep field position.

3rd and 11 ... no pass rush, EASY conversion against soft coverage.

That's starts an 85 yard TD drive, we don't even come close to stopping them.

That really sucked IMO. Then, of course, there was yet another busted punt coverage. We've seen those exact same problems kill us for years. As of preseason game #2, it seems Whis has made no headway with his "Smart, tough and disciplined" credo. I have to wonder if his approach has been too soft for this underachieving franchise.

Joe, I couldn't agree more. I was there for the 1st half and had enough allready. The over pursuit and undisiplined play of the ends glared out much of the 1st half. They were able to exploit that easily for big gains.

We still are not covering the TE hardly at all. They are allowed to go down the seam barely given any notice. If I were another team preparing for this team, every other pass would go to my TE until they could stop it with regularity.

I didn't think that Wells looked very good this game. Wasn't getting push when needed and was shed by backers to make tackles. Grade C- at best. His pass protection is still an asset.

Rolle's best position might be (probobly will be)safteyAnyone listening, while it's still pre-season. Get him over there.

The defense overall, as you said Joe, was really disappointing. I really hope we made the right decision in keeping Clancy around, but it is BY FAR my biggest concern going into the season. I think the Oline is shaping up and will be sufficient, if not ok-to-good.

Agree on Rolle. Green and Hood should be our starting corners. Rolle has had his chance and he continues his poor play. He cannot cover well enough to play corner in the NFL.

Good observations by all. Went to the game and left after 3 quarters. Our offense will be good and score plenty of points. However the defense could not contain Houston. They really controlled the clock in the first half and just moved the ball up and down the field. We had no pass rush at all.

Agree with many that Hood and Green will be the starting cbs. Rolle is a bust. Hate to say that but that is a fact considering the money we paid him for being the 8th pick in the 2005 draft.

Concerning Rackers Joe. Both of the previous seasons he was booming his kickoffs in the pre-season and the first part of the regular season. Its about week 9-10 however when his leg gets tired because he very rarely gets TB's in the last part of the season.

Its nice to have while hes got the leg. But it will tail off as the season goes along.

Similar comments were made about him last game as well. Is that a surprise seeing last 2-3 years how he struggled at the position?

I hope the staff can try him as a safety because he is having problems at CB.

I think Rackers struggled last season from the beginning on KO.

No Im almost 100% he was leading the league in TB's in the first 8 games or so then he couldnt get a TB to save his life. Much like the first year where I devoted a whole thread about his dead leg towards the middle on of that season.

I think the coaches learned a lot about "what they've got" from this game. I also think the game helped separate the wheat from the chaff before cutdown time (For example, a number of borderline players on the punt coverage team that allowed Jacoby Jones to escape for an 83 yard TD may have "cut themselves")

Two losses vs. no wins in preseason is no huge deal - except that each week without a win creates a gorilla fast nearing 800 lbs and will no doubt serve as a distraction during the coming week.

Some of the mistakes we saw in the game were of the same variety that cost us a number of wins a year ago. Either they've got to stop pretty soon (like right now) or we'll be looking at "the Cardinals of a year ago" (not a very bright prospect).

Specifically, those mistakes include - (a) Rolle loses man in pass coverage, (b) Hood and Francisco beaten deep for TD, (c) Penalty on Castille negates JJ touchdown run, (d) Blown contain after contain after contain mainly on the right outside, but also on the left side once or twice. (e) blown punt coverage results in an 83 yard TD and(f) Rolle gets flagged still again for pass interference (although frankly, I thought the call was bogus).

You could look up the play by play of a number of games we lost last season and see the same type and number of mistakes cropping up over and over. If we want to change "the culture of the team", we could do a lot worse than change it right here.

On the plus side, Leinart and Warner (and our top 3 wideouts) looked sharp. So did our draft picks. (Aside from Levi's penalty, his name was seldom if ever called - a good thing - and I thought he had a surprisingly good game). Patrick's 2 grabs suggests he's settled down and is ready to make a run for a more prominent TE role. Breaston had a big day (although, if he needs to break tackles to pick up a crucial yard or two, he's going to have to hit the weight room even more). The biggest thing we have going for us is that we're not deficient in the talent dept. Our problems are all up there between the ears and can be fixed.

I remember otherwise but may be wrong... I couldn't find the KO stats from last year especially that include touchbacks for each game.

I agree about Arrington. I would give him some legit carries next week vs. San Diego. He's looked like a different player. And he has one thing #32 and #31 do not have and that is speed.

I sit in the ROH north end zone and missed the pass from Boldin to Fitz because I was watching Levi. I watched him for at least 8 plays and Mario #90 Lined up on the opposite side and was not rushing from Leinart blind side. I thought Levi played very well but did make the critical false start.

Excellent points, all, Joe.

The problem is...the Cards didn't contain or cover last year and nothing's at all different.

This is awful, Joe. Pitiful, really.

Pop Warner defenses are coached better.

I wish I saw it this way. I don't. The z'bs for some reason have it in for Rolle. He gets more calls for PI that are so very marginal than anyone I have ever seen. He can play the run well, but get him out in the open and he sorta' reminds me of me!

Upfront on D we are good. We have some winners. It gets weaker as you move further back to the DB's. Hayes stands out and I am sure that when the flag drops we will see much better play out of Dansby. We better consider Monty as a starter as it stands now.

I would like to be a fly on the wall when the watch the D films with the coaches. I think we will see the 3/4 take a back seat...don't have 3/4 personnel.

Watching Warner hit Merrit was for the second quarter stretch was a real pleasure.
