Overall, I'm ENCOURAGED....REALLY!!!

Am I deluded?? Too much kool-aid?? Just plain ol' KRAZY?? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong. After (40) years of Cardinal football I'm very familar w/the sickening feeling we all felt after Sunday's game. Whether "new" or "old", Cardinal fans have all felt it. We keep hoping, trusting, waiting... I would describe our over-all emotional-state as frustrated, anxious, even desperate... In short, a world of negative feelings ready to come to the surface at the 1st sign of things not going our way. So, why am I encouraged?? Here's why.

1./ It's been quite awhile since I've read a "Bidwill is cheap, they don't care, etc." thread. In fact, I read in another post where the B's supposedly came into the locker-room boiling mad after the game, and let the players have it. If true, that seems a far cry from the days when I personally thought they viewed the game as just "business as usual". (ie; "Hey, we lost, BUT we had a good crowd." Ca-ching!!) So, I'm encouraged because I REALLY think there's a strong desire to "win" now.

2./ Whiz is the BEST coach we've had since Coryell. Has he made all the right calls?? Of course not but keep in mind this is year #1. New "terminology", etc.) He's learning about clock management, player personnel, etc. (I have to believe practice- evaluation of a player, etc. is far different from actual game experience. I suck at chess and it seems to me that each game is a "moving" chess game. In short, he's learning on the fly. BUT the players have to "play" smart. PERIOD!! BUT one thing I am encouraged about is that I keep hearing "positive" comments" from the players about him and the staff. ( ie;" He's letting us try and make the plays, etc." I WANT a coach who believes in his players! How many times have we been successful on 4th down this year?? How many times have we scored just before half-time?? I've always believed the game is about momentum.

3./ The fan-base. We are a DETERMINED, RESILIENT bunch!! BUT we carry a "fragile", often-challenged, hope. Hoping for the BEST, secretly expecting the worst. I'm sure that there was a feeling of dis-belief as the recent game un-folded. We were quickly down (10). How could this be happening?? We were supposed to win easily. We should be thinking about the excitement of making the play-offs. We should be thinking about "how we'll beat the Browns". BUT here we are in a see-saw struggle. We might, even, "LOSE". Again, I can almost imagine the disbelief and the "here we go again"-feeling permeating the crowd. ...And would that lend itself to a "quieter", more pensive, kinduv' in-shock" crowd?? (ie: noise-level, or lack there-of) As I read this board it's so extreme. We win, and we're excited and cautiously optimistic, but lose....and it's DOOMSDAY! We're cursed!, etc. Funny how no one talks about the Red Sox "curse" anymore. Good management & good players cancel out ANY curse it seems.

4./ Rod Graves-personnel. OK, I am NO capologist. I can only see who is still "in" Cardinal red and who is gone. ...And what I "see" is we're retaining our good, "core"-players. I can't think of any player recently (past few years) who has gone on to great success somewhere else. In the past, we were simply a "farm"-team for the rest of the league. ...And EVERYONE knew it. I'll also add that we are no longer "laughed" at on Draft Day. ...And to me the "draft" is the un-official start of the season. In those (2) frantic days you're team either gets better or worse.

So, there you have it. Some "reasons" why, overall, I'm encouraged. We're (5-6). We've scored (254) points and given up (259). That sounds like a .500 team to me. BUT we are headed in the right direction. GO CARDS!! I BELIEVE that in a year or two we're going to be something special. Believe it or not! ...And THIS year, may STILL hold a "surprise" or two.

One "last" note. I've been thinking about Neil Racker's "kicks". The ones I'm remembering that we're missed, all seem to be just wide-left, so here's my thought. When he "kicks" his body-language goes "left" and his little victory trot goes "left". Is there somehow a "connection" here?? Is he pulling away too soon?? I'm also wondering about the "hold". (ie; Barr) Man, for the days of Jim Bakken & Roger Wehrli. Ball snapped, ball placed, KICK GOOD! They made it look so easy, which it's not.

NSDF, I agree. Whiz is the BEST off season acquisition this team has EVER had.

Now that my anger/disappointment/frustration has settled, a big part of the loss Sunday has to do with the banged up secondary. We finally ran out of reserves who could step up. Our starting corners are adequate but we don't have much depth and remember that AW was out and yes T Holt has not lived up to our expectations.

This team is better coached at the position level than ever before. Yes, Whis does some dumb things sometimes but he'll learn.

Having said that, I'm growing tired of the Monday press conf. where Whiz sez "yes, that's a weakness and we have to work on that". He said we would be a smart, tough, disciplined football team. I'm not seeing the smart and disciplined part so much.

Hey, Prescott!

Well, I guess we're an "army" of (2), so far. ...And I agree w/your thoughts about the secondary. We miss A.W. His "presence" and especially, his tackling. Think about it. Karlos Dansby had a "monster" game when we beat the Lions. Antrelle Rolle had a "monster" game when we beat the Bengals. Who had a "monster" game on Defense for us this past Sun.?? I read in the ESPN graphics today that Patrick Willis/49ers had (18) tackles in the game. Now, THAT's a "monster" game that made a difference. We NEED someone to step-up Sun. to beat the Browns. I know we blame Neil for the loss but we scored 30+ points. ...And got beat! The Defense has to man-up for that.

NSDF, I want to be there with you, but I just can't do it yet. While there is truth to some of what you say, I still see too many things on Sundays that leave me dumbfounded.

Whiz has never been a head coach before so there is definitely a learning curve. If he forgets to check the play clock and it costs us next season, then I'll be pissed. I think Whiz will continue to improve as a head coach, though.

It is frustrating to be two missed FG's and a fumble recovery from being 8-3. For some reason this franchise just can't get over that last hump.

I think you're softening up already--like a stick of butter left on the counter.

Butter doesn't melt or soften.

I am not soft. Otherwise this post would have swayed me. Hell, I could have posted this back in the day...before Sunday.

So far Whisenhunt hasn't won as many games his first season as Denny Green did. The problems with clock management and penalties haven't improved and the running game is back in the tank.

The team is still finding incredible ways to lose games and the pass defense of the middle of the field is as bad as it was last year. The only reason they haven't lost to the worst team in the NFL is because they don't play them. To make up for it they lose twice to a bad 49ers team. Just like Denny did his first season.

The Cards have returned to the thrilling days of 2004 and are destined for a similar 6-10 finish. I'm so excited.

Until Whisenhunt gets to the playoffs, and wins a game, I'll still declare Vince Tobin to be the best coach since Coryell. All the rest of that stuff is just blowing air to me. Right now, Whisenhunt hasn't even topped what Buddy Ryan or Dave McGinnis did in their first years.

I refuse to call a coach that has his team as the most penalized team in the league, "best coach since Coryell". Wiz's coached team is by far worse in that category compared to any of the other bad penalized years under Green, and it isnt even close which is even mroe sad.

Penalties equal an undisciplined team.

We'll see if he can fix that by next year. Six of the 10 penalties Sunday were on special teams. I bet the special teams coach had some splainin' to do.

Yeah, I'm sure Whis told him "We need to clean that up." That's probably all taken care of now.

You guys wouldn't know a good coach if it bit you in the asp. Whis inherited a bad team and has put us in position to win every game this year while using a backup QB with 1 arm. That's more than I can say for Ryan and McGinnis.

I just don't care about these types of arguments anymore. I used to buy into that sort of thinking, but I can't rationalize "losing as progress" anymore. Results are all I care about now, and that was a damn ugly result this past Sunday. That, the Carolina game, the earlier SF game, all WAAAYYY too much like bad football we've seen under every coach here.

FWIW, Ryan came into the job with the team in the best shape IMO. The team at that McGinnis took over full time was way, way weaker than this bunch Whis got.

Ryan freaking ruined this team for years for crying out loud.

Still, even if you just look at results, 5-6 is the best we've been after 11 games in a loooong time.

He was wide right against KC last year but a good number go wide left.

McGinnis inherited a QB with no brain and won 7 games his first year - much like we're probably going to do this year. Tobin - now there's a guy who REALLY inherited no talent - Kent Graham/Boomer at QB? Leshon Johnson/Leerand McElroy at RB? An offensive line that was gutted by Buddy Ryan? A defense with Aeneas Williams and... that's about it. Now THAT 7-9 coaching job was a GREAT coaching job.

At this point, the juries still out on Whiz - there's been good and bad, but an incredibly cupcake schedule for the most part. The fact that we've lost twice too the Niners and once to a Panthers team that save our game has lost 6 games in a row is a BIG knock on Whiz at this point. Beating the Steelers and the Hags are plusses... like I said, jury's still out.

I will be encouraged when this team can play a smart, disciplined and tough game! Not double digit penalties every freaking game, bad clock management, bad situational play calling. I will give him a pass on players as I beleive he hasn't had a fair chance to get some of his own talent in here yet. Hopefully they look a hell of alot better than Barr!
